If you mean you want to start the car without the switch interfering, yes, you can do that by cutting the tan wire from the starter relay and grounding it to the chassis. This will allow the engine to start in any gear. However, the switch does a lot more that neutral safety. It tells the pcm what gear you want to choose. So, if the switch is bad, it could give the pcm bad data about your selection. Bottom line is, the car should start (please have your foot on the brake when you try), but the transmission may not work as expected.

Where is neutral switch on a 92 dodge caravan

Safety Switch Most neutral safety switches are combinations of a neutral safety switch and a backup lamp switch. Others have separate units for these two distinct functions. When the reverse light switch is not part of the neutral safety switch, it seldom needs adjustment, as it is directly activated by the transmission or the gear selector linkage.
f_ttat_t3.20.jpg Typical location of a neutral safety switch on a transaxle. Reprinted with permission of Ford Motor Company. A neutral safety switch allows current to pass from the starter switch to the starter when the lever is placed in the P or N position. Some neutral safety switches are nonadjustable. If these prevent starting in the P or N position and the gear selector linkage is correctly adjusted, they should be replaced.
To adjust a typical neutral safety switch:
  • Place the shift lever in neutral.
  • Loosen the attaching bolts for the switch.
  • Using the angling pin, move the switch until the pin falls into the hole in its rotor.
  • Tighten the attaching bolts.
  • Recheck the switch for continuity. If no voltage is present, replace the switch.
  • The switch sometimes controls the operation of the back-up lights also. With the engine off and the key on, put the selector in reverse position. Check the back-up lights to see that they are on. Then, check in the drive position to see that they are out.

I have a 2003 dodge neon SE 2.0 liter L4 SFI SOHC 16V, 4 dr sedan. my problem is that the car will not go into gear or move at all. it still starts and runs great it just wont catch gears and move. Could...

if it was the neutral safety switch it more than likely wouldn`t start at all or start when without pushing on the clutch.it sounds more like the linkage could be damaged(think these are cable) or its out of adjustment and needs adjusting.does it feel like its going into gear(like it does when working) but not engaging if so it could be a problem with the transmission.first have the linkage checked out.

My back up lights wont work on my 97 dodge neon, i changed the fuse and the light bulbs, now what? help please

Hi!!
What controls the Back Up Lights is the Neutral Safety Switch/Back Up Switch, located on the transmission shifter (engine compartment). Check for 12v+ coming in from the fuse box to the Neutral Safety Switch, if OK, check for 12v+ out of the wire going to the back up lights when in Reverse, if no power, replace switch, if there is power, check wiring from switch to back up lights.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Where is the neutral safety switch for 2000 dodge neon

The transmission in your Neon using a TRS, or transmission range sensor, instead of a neutral start switch. The TRS assemby is mounted inside the transmission above the valve body.

My 95 neon won't start. it makes a single ticking noise when i try to start it but only when it's in neutral.

the tick is the starter relay applying power to the starter. 3 possibilities
1 - your battery is so dead it cant turn the starter once it engages the engine
2 - your battery terminals are so corroded they can't pass enough current to start your car
3 - the starter windings are shorted out and need replacing

>>> if the car can be jump started it's not #3, if you can put a volt meter on the batter and it reads between 12-14v then it's most likely not #1
