Check the 8th digit of your vin and the letter (engine) is probably listed as "W". This engine was used in the 03-04-and 05 models. Take note though I purchased a 2000 V6 explorer new which was suppose to come with the 4.0 V6 SOHC engine. A year of so later I was doing some minor work and noticed I had the old 4.0 pushrod engine in the vehicle. I immediately check with Ford and learned some leftover engines from model year 1999, which used both V6 engines, were installed in the 2000 model. I was instructed to check the engine code with the vin. Sure enough the code was for the older engine. Using an engine with the same engine code should work.

SOURCE: What transfer cases will interchange with a 99 Ford Explorer 5.0?

I don't know ---but I will suggest that you repair yours

I once owned a trans repair shop & I don't suggest
you get caught up in salvage yard parts, when yours
is not that hard to open up or fix.

If you don't do all your own work, then I'm the wrong
guy to impose my thoughts

Will the parts from a 2002 Ford Explore interchange with a 2001 Ford Expedition???

If you're referring to the engine some v8s are interchangeable as well as some electrical parts but most explorers are equipped with v6s and all expeditions are v8s explorers are mid size expeditions full size. I usually look for part numbers on AutoZone.com and check for vehicle fitment by swithiching the vehicle selection on the drop box visit the page and you'll see what I mean.
