On my 1997 dodge avenger on the passenger fuse box it has empty spaces with the metal in them. What are they for

Dash lights are complicated as power is supplied by a ribbon cable that also does other features. Check the Light Dimmer wheel first as that is the main reason for having no dash lights..

Under the cover of both the fuse box inside the car and under the hood there should be a diagram showing what each fuse or relay is for.

I found several images at Google but too often it was NOT for the 97 avenger so you could get fooled. I was not able to copy the the one for the relay box and post but you should be able to hit Ctrl +P and get it to print for you.

This one indicated it was for the fuse box. Hope this helps.

It is common for some relay positions to not be used on many cars. These are places for relays that control things that your vehicle is not equipped with. For example, if your vehicle is not equipped with fog lamps, the spot where the fog lamp relay would go will be empty and there will be no connectors in that spot either.

As for your overheating problem, it needs to be properly diagnosed. Most Dodge engines are VERY unforgiving when it comes to being overheated. Even if it was not caused by a blown head gasket, there is a really good chance that it has one now.

Combustion gasses in your cooling system can keep your fans from running, because the gasses push the water down and away from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor that tells the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when to operate the fans.

Your Avenger is actually equipped with four different fan control relays. It is very unlikely that all of the relays would be bad (or missing).

Proper diagnosis required.

my book says to look here: Behind A/C and heater control panel, to right handside of steering column.

The egr itself is on the backside of the engine closest to the firewall towards the driver side. You have to lean past the intake to get to it. The resonator is about 4-5" to the left (passenger side) of it.

Passenger side of the vehicle, under the car just in front of the rear tire.

A faulty switch or faulty flasher assembly,Fuse should be marked HAZ if you can't locate call your local dealer for assitance on fuse # or a complete discription should be in your owners manual.

Check under hood for box labeled fuses & relays, I.D. is underside of cover usually.
