SOURCE: removing oil pan from 98 explorer V8 5.0

nniezgodzki: if you have a 2wd explorer, you need to remove the torsion bars to gain access to the oil pan based on the procedures shown in Alldata. The torsion bars are the rods which fit into the lower control arms and go towards the center of the truck frame. Removal and installation of the torsion bars has a procedure you need to follow, make sure you check into it and follow it. if you need help, write me and i'll do my best to help you.

SOURCE: leaky oil pan

There are a couple of solutions here.

You can try to retorque the pan bolts and this may slow or fix the leak. This is probably the easiest thing to try.

You may be able to drop the pan down to the cross member and sneak the gasket into place. This is more difficult, but may save having to jack up the engine.

You can't remove structural bar.

If you do decide to lift the engine, you can probably replace the gasket by lifting the engine while everything is still connected.

Good Luck with your project.

Tim

Thanks Ford! You could have made a bolt on crossmember.

no they dont make a partial gasket kit... unless youve damaged the oil pan gasket, the one that ison there should be fine... put some black silicone rtv sealant where the front cover and oil pan/ block meet. if youve damaged the gasket you have to drop the pan.

SOURCE: Must the torsion bar be removed on my 1995 Ford

You do not need to remove the torsion bar. just jack up the vehicle under the lower control arm. The shock will also keep the lower control arm from traveling to far.

If it has a torsion bar running through the lower control arm than it must have independent front suspension. Remove the caliper and bracket. The rotor should knock off but it can be left on. remove the axle nut. The drive axle should push through the hub. Some tapping with a hammer may be needed. Separate the upper and lower ball joints from the knuckle and remove the knuckle (you will be able to push the drive axle all the way through once the knuckle is free of the ball joints).

remove the snap ring from the lower ball joint and hit it out with a hammer. You will need a ball joint press to install the new ball joint.

SOURCE: My speedometer and odometer on my 98 ford explorer

the speedometer/odometer works on a cable that goes into the side of the transmission with one 10mm bolt holding it in. It sounds as if the cable has been broken, pulled loose, or siezed up. Its easy to check the end under the vehicle but its very complicated checking it inside the dashboard. If you are a do it yourself type of person, id look underneath and see if the connection under the vehicle is still connected. Look on left rear of the transmission for a cable that goes into it and is held with a "Y" bracket and a small bolt. The dashboard part is the type of job where u got to make sure you remember where each screw goes to get back together.

How to change oil pump in 1997 Ford Explorer

Pull the Engine and Transmission as a Unit, separate them, put Engine on an engine stand, swivel up-side down, pull the oil pan, remove the oil strainer/pick up & tube, Where the end of the tube comes from s your oil pump and it is pretty self explanatory how it unbolts. When installing the new pump make sure line up the pump drive properly and follow original steps in reverse.

Changing top wishbone arm on toyota hiace van 1997

I'll add this answer for anyonelse considering doing this.

Firstly, this really isn't easy even if your reasonably competent you will need the right tools. i.e. breaker bar (a biggun), blow lamp, wire brush, good socket set, pliers, big hammer, long handled 22mm spanner pref 2. Grease, for starters.

I have just done this to a 2003 hi ace.

1. Have a strong cup of tea.

2. Jack up vehicle take of front wheel and place on axle stands / blocks.

3. The torsion bar adjustment is located in front of the fuel tank and is a length of threaded bar with 2 * 22mm nuts on it. Take a measurement of where the torsion bar is taken up to. This ideally should be checked and reset, but an approximation will do for now.
Release the tension in the torsion bar. I did this with a combination of heat (mind the fuel tank and lines). Leverage and swearing. There is an access hole in the floor pan to get at the top end of this bolt, however I managed with out due to having converted my van in to a camper making access really tricky.
If this part hasn't made you cry it is worth proceeding.

4. Disconect torsion bar where it joins the wishbone.

5. Remove split pin from wheel hub assembly and remove nut,

6. Remove two bolts on the chassis. On the passenger side (UK), You will either have to remove the fuel filter system or try and work through the little hole inside the wheel arch. (lost a lot of knuckle skin at this point!), Drivers side was easier.

7. Persuade the wishbone to come away from the hub assembly, also quite hard!

8. Refit in the reverse order, tensioning the torsion bar to previous settings. Note: to make life easier make sure you clean and grease all of the threads.

9. Make sure you get the wheel alignment checked, and you should also get a real mechanic to look over what you have done before your wheel falls off on the motorway and you crash into a bus full of nuns / orphans.

10. have a beer, you have deserved it, just don't drive after.

n.b. I am not a real car mechanic, but i do work on big boat engines and pontoon systems and can spit a good distance. Please don't blame me if it all goes wrong. All of the other advice on the net says don't try this at home, and they have a good point.

What is the torson bar on jimmy and where can you get the part for it?

1995-2005 Models NOTE: The following procedure requires the use of the torsion bar unloader tool No. J-36202 or equivalent.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the transmission shield, if equipped.
  3. Install a torsion bar unloader tool to relax the tension on the torsion bar adjusting arm screw; record the number of turns necessary to properly install the tool. Remove the adjusting screw and the unloader tool.
  4. Unfasten the lower link mount nut from one side, then disengage the torsion bars. NOTE: Note the direction of the forward end and side of the torsion bar being removed
  5. Remove the lower link nut from the opposite side.
  6. Remove the lower link mount, upper link mount nut, upper link mount and then unfasten the torsion bar from the frame.
To Install:
  1. Install the torsion bar and support.
  2. Install the upper link mount and mount nut.
    • Tighten the nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) on 1995-96 models and 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) on 1997 and later models.
  3. Place a jack under the torsion bar to release tension, then install the lower link mount bushing and nut.
    • Tighten the nut to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) on 1995 models, 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) on 1996-98 models and 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) on 1999 and later models.
  4. Install the torsion bar unloader tool and tighten the tool against the adjusting arm the same number turns recorded earlier, then remove the tool. This loads the torsion bars.
  5. Install the transmission shield, if removed.
  6. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
  7. Check and adjust the Z height as outlined in the wheel alignment portion of this section.

On a 2002 isuzu trooper 3.5 V6 with auto and 4wheel drive do i need to remove engine to pull oil pan? i have a loud banging in motor and need to check crankshaft & bearings

Yes, you need to pull the engine to remove the oil pan. This requires that you remove the propeller shafts and the third cross member to slide the transmission toward the rear of the vehicle. I suggest you purchase a service manual before you start this process. More than likely the rod bearing for cylinder 1 has failed. This seems to be a common problem with later model 3.5L Trooper engines because the oil pump and oil gallery do not deliver oil as efficiently to the number 1 rod bearing.

Replacing the catalytic converter on 2002 GMC Yukon

From LustyKid:

What may appear to be correct, can actually be INCORRECT. If you removed without touching the other two components, you definitely have the WRONG ONE.

Personally, I have never heard of having to remove torsion bars or oil pans to replace catalic conv.
If still in doubt. Let MIDAS do the job. Save yourself aggrevation. Unless you are really handy which you appear to be since you were able to remove it. Installing would be the reverse, provided you have the correct part. Suggest you take your vin number next time to the place where you bought it, they should be able to give you the correct one. If not, replace with OEM. Aftermarkets sometimes cause vehicle to fail emissions test. Goooooooooood Luck!
