SOURCE: 1999 chevy malibu

That engine does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain and therefore much easier to work with as it can only go on a certain way, the primary focus being getting the dots on the timing chain sprockets lined up properly.

I believe, with the engine at Top Dead Center on cylinder #1, the dots will be facing each other. That is to say, the do on the cam sprocket will be facing the dot on the crank sprocket.

SOURCE: Ignition and Transmisssion Locked on 2000 Chevy Malibu

I had a similar problem on a 2001 GM product. The problems all stemmed from a worn out key. Keys are made from softer metals so that they wear out before the expensive cylinder does. Debris had collected in the cylinder preventing ANY key from turning it - corrected that with compressed air. Replaced the key at the dealer by providing the VIN and my ID w/registration - $10.00. Kept the old keys because they still worked for opening the trunk. Try it, I bet your symptoms and fix actions are very similar, at least, I hope so. Regards.

SOURCE: Key stuck in ignition of 1976 chevy corvette stingray 350 auto

If I understand, the key will not rotate to all of the normal positions? If this is true, then I would guess that the trani didn't fully return to the park position please verify, You can check the ignition switch(the one that is half way down the steering column) for defects. Is there any binding, does the rotate freely? Thank you; good luck.

SOURCE: 2005 Chevy Impala ignition switch stuck in off position

if it doesnt turn you have a worn out ignition cylinder, the only fix is to replace it, Code the ignition lock cylinder, if necessary

CAUTION:Perform the body control module (BCM) theft deterrent relearn procedure whenever you replace the ignition switch lock cylinder.

"04 Chevy Malibu: ignition switch stuck in off, key is incerted an removed easily, but will not turn, all solutions remove switch that i have found thus far require switch to be in run position for removal

The problem is going to be the ignition switch/lock cylinder that needs to be replaced. After you replace the switch you may need to do the passlock procedure which you can just google it. Hope that helps:)

Chevy malibu key stuck in ignition

I have a 2001 malibu the the key will not turn completely off(sometimes).
the key switch is on the dash and the shifter is on the middle console. there is a cable going from the switch to the shifter.
I found that if I disconnect the cable from the shifter and push the cable towards the switch, then leave it disconnected I don't have the key stuck issue and the switch will go all the way to the OFF position.
also there is a cylinder connected to the shifter, mine has had the wires cut(from a previous owner) you may need to unplug it.

more than likely it is the cable that goes from the switch(KEY) to the shifter. remove the console and disconnect the cable.
push the cable all the way in towards the switch.
you may have to unplug the cylinder that is in the console.(the wires on mine were cut by the previous owner).

Key stuck in 2009 chevy hhr ignition help please

You may want to try pushing fordward harder into the park position while turning the key to the off position. The locking cable may need adjustment. If this does not work, try turning the collar just behind the keyswitch counter clockwise while trying to remove the key. Thanks, Dana

Ignition and Transmisssion Locked on 2000 Chevy Malibu

On this car there is a cable that is tied into the shifter, so you have to turn the keep to be able to take it out of gear. Its all in 1 big housing. Usually to remove the ignition cylinder it has to be in the run position and you push a little key down to remove it. Since your key won't turn you have to figure out a way to do it.However once you replace the ignition cylinder your shifter will move and you will be able to start the car. To get to the ignition switch/cylinder you have to remove the molding around the instrument panel and then the instrument cluster. Then you can unbolt the assembly in the front with a 10mm socket. lift the assembly up and now you have access to change it out. Hope this helps.
