97 cadillac deville died pulling out of lot into turn lane-accessories/lights stayed on. Started up fine, put back in D, pressed gas & died again right away. Started again, put in D3 & drove fine.

There are many things that can contribute to this problem. It sounds like it may be ignition related. Possibly an ignition control module or ignition coil. The check engine light coming on while driving is the key to finding the problem. The light comes on when the computer finds a problem and will then store it in its memory. Have the codes checked for what the computer has found to be at fault and with a little diagnostics, should lead you to the problem

it could be your alternator or you cynloid went bad i would check them first

sounds like a mass air sensor problem. When you give it gas does it bog down? A mass air flow wil do that.

I really doubt the fuel is the issue. It could be a clogged fuel filter or weap fuel pump or any number of other reasons. Since you just bought the car you should get it diagnosed before you end up stranded.

well first off, check the glove box light blub, make sure it shuts off when you close the door, check it by pressing the switch with your finger to make sure it shuts off, also check under the hood for the light there if there is one, pull the bulb, and the same thing for any bulb in the trunk, then check again after a day to see if the battery dies, if it is dying while the vehicle is not running then it is the battery, if it is dying after it is running then it is the alt. you can check that also tho with a multimeter set to the DC volts setting, place the black end <the ground to any grounded area> and the red end <the hot lead to the back of the alt. > it should be reading higher then 12 volts, normally should be a higher reading then 12 volts... if you are getting a lower reading or just 12 volts then the alt. is bad and needs to be replaced...hope this helps you out...

These cars are notorious for intake manifold leaks. This could also be a throttle position sensor. If you have a MIL (check engine light) I would scan it with an OBD II scanner and pull the relevent code off the scanner it will give us a much more accurate direction to proceed
