SOURCE: Tailgate Lock/Latch Problem
Within the little round punchout, I stuck a screwdriver in and moved around any parts I could until I lit the latch mechanism. I hear a pop and gave a push. Lucky I guess.

Have you checked the fuses? When the door issue happened did anything else stop working? Could be fuse, power supply issue, remote issue, electrical, or something fallen off or broken inside the door. You'll need to climb in the back & carefully try to remove the panel on the door. Sometimes difficult when the door is closed. Just a few ideas for you to consider. Good luck

Maybe a little late here but i have a fix for this after turning down my dealers generous offer of a 750gbp fix i did some extensive googling and found this.... With your ignition on open the tailgate using the catch inside then turn off ignition and disconnect the battery for a minute. Reconect the battery and turn on ignition and let the warning lights go through their cycle. With the ignition still on shut the tailgate and hey Presto should be as good as new.

Very likely that it is the switch. It might just be a bad connection in the switch. Try wiggling it and letting it shoot out against the spring. If none of these work, remove the switch and short the wire against the bodywork, or against the second wire if there is one.
Hi check the closing relay it could be the problem...
