SOURCE: Gem Module, Fuse Box and Window Reseal

This 1997 Ford F150 needs the GEM module changed due to multiple conditions. To see testing that lead to this repair please click here. The GEM module is located t the rear of the interior fuse box.
dsc02823.jpg
The first step is to remove the trim panel that covers the gap between the upper side of the steering column and the dash. It just unsnaps from the dash. It makes it a little easier to remove if you move the shifter all the way down to drive 1.
dsc02824.jpg
With that out of the way the lower dash cover can now be removed. Most of the screws have 7 mm heads but there are two that have 8 mm heads.
dsc02825.jpg
Those two are at the lower edge of the fuse box.
dsc02826.jpg
One wiring harness needs to be disconnected from the panel.
dsc02827.jpg
Now the screws for the fuse box can be removed.
dsc02828.jpg
The wiring harnesses can be removed from the back of the fuse box. Two 10 mm headed bolts at the center of each connector.
dsc02829.jpg

Next remove the tube brace from around the bottom of the steering column. Four fasteners with 13 mm heads.
dsc02830.jpg

Now wiggle, pry and twist the fuse box and GEM module assembly down.
dsc02831.jpg
After the assembly is down far enough unplug the remaining harness connectors from the GEM module.
dsc02832.jpg
Almost there.
dsc02837.jpg
The assembly is now free of the vehicle.
dsc02833.jpg
The GEM module is held to the back of the fuse box by three phillips headed screws.
dsc02834.jpg
Easy to remove Now.
dsc02836.jpg
With the three screws removed the GEM unplugs from the back of the fuse box.
dsc02835.jpg
I put it all back together and checked my repair for power to the driver's power window switch.

Door ajar alarm is on constantly when dash lights dimmer is on. Turn to off and alarm stops

Your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop that's good with automotive electrical problems . Checking for DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes would be a good first step . The GEM - generic electronic module is fords BCM - body control module . There is a door ajar switch located in each door , when a door is open the GEM module detects this an turns on the alarm (chime ,bing or what ever noise yours makes ) Also turns on the little car symbol showing a particular door as being open . You could have a GEM module problem , Or you could go to www.bbbind.com/ Find wiring diagrams an try to trouble shoot this yourself. Go on youtube an watch videos on basic electrical trouble shooting , how to read a wiring diagram . Plus check out some repair videos door ajar switch problems !

All windows will not work on my 2005 ford taurus

2002 taurus. don't have 2005. Sorry.

Could be your GEM module. Call your dealer and ask if your 2005 has GEM module. It's expensive so be sure it is problem first.

Dealer can test with NGS tool.

CAUTION: Once the new module is installed, it is necessary to download the module configuration information from the diagnostic tool equipment into the new module. For additional information, refer to Section 418-01 .

Principles of Operation
The generic electronic module (GEM) constantly monitors its subsystems for concerns. If a concern is found in one of the subsystems, the GEM will record the concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
The ignition switch position is very important to the GEM functionality. Erratic or unexpected GEM functions can often be traced to problems with these ignition GEM inputs.
The GEM controls a variety of systems:
  • windshield wipers
  • courtesy lamps
  • warning chimes
  • keyless entry
  • interior and exterior lamps
  • power windows
  • parking brake actuator warning chime
Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
