Yes....sounds normal for a WRX. Before you shell out for a new clutch plate check the hydraulic fluid levels.
But if you've left it too long, at worst, you need a complete clutch kit costing (wherever you may be) £250 which is the same in dollars and euros right now. Save even more by doing it yourself... Good luck

It is bad and the clutch assembly will need to be replaced and the flywheel machined smooth if possible, a huge job requiring special tools and a high skill level. If you do have the tools and you think you have the skill let me know.

SOURCE: 02 impreza wrx problem with turbo PLEASE HELP

This is not the turbo it is the over-powering the clutch, it happens in 5th because that is when most worn clutches slip, it is the biggest load, replace your clutch.

SOURCE: 1995 subaru impreza wrx sti overboost problem

I bought a 1995wrx turbo japanese import 260bhp standard, which can only run on v-power 99octane fuel, from scooby clinic in chesterfield (scooby race tune expert mechanics).I was the first person in england to test drive on road (it had not long arrived in the uk & had been put on rolling road a few times),whilst test driving, the turbo boosted normal & then started juddering slightly etc etc,i asked scooby lad "what was that" he wasnt sure(office boy!) & assured me that whatever it was theyre top mechanics would sort it out & do a full service, change the belts etc etc, ...so i bought it,luckily with a 30 day warranty included starting from collecting it.I picked it up about a week later,i got as far as 20mile away(nearly home) & it started juddering again, nothing too serious,so i thought we'll see how we go.next day same again, after 3days it were juddering more visciously, getting worse to the point where i nearly hit the windscreen,i thought its got to be a fuel blockage?.it backfired twice & not long after that packed up & would not start again,i foned scooby clinic & towed car back up to chesterfield.they kept saying "i must of put wrong fuel in",they ended up taking engine out cos head gaskets had blown, engine had died,6-7 wks later they told me to come & collect car with no charge,i was told to run it in for 500 miles steadily,& then take it back, they then changed oil, sparplugs & boosted turbo back up(re-connected it),the boss apologised to me & said if he knew it were like that he would never have sold it at all to anyone,he explained that the engine was carboned up(blocked) they did a nearly full engne re-build free of charge.the boss said if he knew it were blocked up they would of gave it a thrashing to clear the engine.

SOURCE: Burning clutch smell yet clutch not slipping

The problem is quite possibly brakes that are not releasing properly. It may be the emergency brake cable hanging up and keeping the back brakes on.

The other possibility is that the front calipers are stuck or sticking.

Brake linings are made out of the same material as clutch material.

If you are careful not to burn yourself, next time you smell burning clutch/brake, you can put your hand on each of the wheels in the center and feel them for heat. If they are warm/hot, you can tell which one(s) are causing the problem.

If you need more help post a comment.

Thanks,

Tim

Car: 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX. feels like losing power on uphill drive, and when given more gas, something smells like burning..

It may be the transmission is slipping under load. Check the transmission oil.If the oil is a dark colour and smells burnt
this is probably the problem.

Sitting still at a light, clutch half way in in neutral, pushed the clutch all the way in to go into first and I heard a popping noise, then it was like the clutch is sticky but with no pressure, its like...

UNfortunately it sounds like your clutch has failed...and is slipping.....it sounds like the pressure plate may have fractured......and considering it is a wrx, this would definetly be the weakest point as the gearboxes are almost indestructible......

2002 WRX won't start

Could be lack of current from the battery, corrosion on the terminals, bad ignition switch, bad neutral safety or clutch safety switch, bad solenoid, bad starter brushes, bad starter field, bad engine ground strap, or siezed engine.

For a quick check, turn the headlights on as you try to crank.

If they do not dim, then current never getting to starter field.
If no click as well, then not getting to starter solenoid.

If they dim but come back when you stop, then battery good and either starter or engine is bad.

If they dim and don't come back, then battery is bad.

CLUTCH JUDDER IN 1ST GEAR WHEN START OFF THEN OK 2004 SUBARU 2.0L WRX

A note to the first answer, if the clutch chatters in first gear that is indicative of a bad pressure plate or broke clutch springs, if it is not removed and repaired soon the clutch will shatter and damage the flywheel and possibly the input shaft and the the pilot bearing which could damage the transmission. There is also a possibility of the spring coming out of the clutch plate and wedging between the flywheel and pressure or clutch plate and causing severe damage to the internal parts just mentioned.

My 2008 WRX has 22K. The clutch peddle started

Subaru makes/sells a good product. Too bad you've had issues with the clutch in/of your WRX. Since you have 25 years of experience driving manual transmission car(s) you should understand that the problem can not be pinpointed without taking the component apart. Your vehicle is under the manufacturer warranty so Subaru should repair/replace the defective clutch. After the WRX is fixored sell it and buy another VW......Peace
