First did you check that your battery cables connections are clean and tight on the battery, I had this same problem I thought. My battery would start my car but over a few days it would go dead, I purchased a new battery and again same thing. I looked and found out that the battery clamp was corroded and not allowing the battery to re charge when the engine was running. I simply replaced the connector and have not had a problem for over a yr now.

SOURCE: My Subaru won't start without

This procedure usually works:
·Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter. Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine.

·Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.

·Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck bendix gear.
·Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.

1997 Monte Carlo battery wont stay charged after a jump. The car will warm up then when turned off won't turn over it makes a clicking noise when ignition is terned.

Could be a bad battery, and or alternator, if the alternator does not charge the battery when the vehicle is running your battery will drain causing no start.

Car needs to be jumped or will not start

Car starts fine with a jump? You sure your battery is good? If the battery is good then you must have a connection bad right at the battery. If you jump it and it starts then the starter is ok. If you jump it and it stays running with lights on, heater fan on, etc. then the alternator is probably ok. The alternator won't keep the car from starting, but it might not let it start the next time if it is not recharging the battery. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

The car was running fine one day then the next day it would not start. We tried jumping it thinking the battery might be dead and it still would niot start. The car has power until we take the jumper...

Sounds like you have a toasted battery or alternator. Have you performed a load test on the battery? Have you tried to charge the battery? First remove the battery and charge it externally from the vehicle. If the battery won't hold a charge, or won't hold a charge of 12 volts, replace it. Once you have the vehicle started, test the operation of the alternator. It should be putting out at least 13 volts back to the battery to keep it charged - if it is putting less than 13 volts or more than 16 volts, replace the alternator.

Whenever, you replace a battery, it is a good idea to have the alternator checked to make sure that it is producing enough amperage to run the vehicle and charge the battery.

Suggest you take your car to an auto parts store and ask them to test your alternator under load. That is the most likely problem, your alternator.

completely charge the battery , most things in the car will run on low amps,, but the starter requires a bunch, if you have a walmart near you they will charge and do a LOAD test on the battery for free,, I suggest a Load test anyway, since it can read 12 volts yet a cell in the battery can be dead , also, make sure all battery connections are clean and tight, if possible have the OBD codes read, there are places that do this for free ,, so check around,

My car wont turn over i was told it was the alternator, i just replaced the battery 2 months ago but now it wont start again. is there a fuse for the alternator

The alternator is never the reason for a car not turning over, unless the battery is low. If the car will jump start, remove the cables and check the voltage at the battery while the car is still running. If the voltage is less than 14 volts, take the alternator off and have it tested at the parts store. If the voltage is good, the alternator is fine, and it should be charging the battery.
If the car will not jump start, your problem is elsewhere.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6222268-engine_doesnt_crank_turn_over . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Battery does not stay charged has to be jump started each time I go to start the vehicle

There is a defect in the charging system...battery juice that is being used is not being replaced. This is typically caused by a faulty alternator or voltage regulator. Take the car to an autoparts store and have the alternator tested. Most parts stores will test the alternator at no charge. If the alternator is defective it will have to be replaced. Hope this helped you. Best wishes.

Won't hold a charge

its the battery. the battery holds the charge and the alternator charges it so when you jump the car it stays running because you alternator is providing power when you shut the car off you have a bad battery that isnt holding the charge needed to start it again.
