Can I use a 97 GMC Jimmy brake booster to replace a 98 GMC Jimmy brake booster? I'm buying a vehicle and need this part but found a 97 way cheaper than the 98 and they look the same! TIA

I don't if that differs between manufacturers? I looked at rockauto.com for your brake booster, cardone part for your vehicle lists 97--2005 for your vehicle, brake booster.
If all the hook-ups are the same as the one your looking at, I don't know why it wouldn't work?
You know how it is, I see nothing from here.

I found it on rockauto for the 98 it was $114. But I found one for a 97 that was only $65. Saving money is a big deal with Christmas coming and all. Thank you! I found the information I needed from everyone! :)

SOURCE: Parking or emergency Brake problem

Check the hardware for the drum emergency brake inside the the rear disc brakes, these pads are for your emergency brake, there should be an adjustment bolt that just sits between the two pads. Also, check the cables running to this set of pads to make sure they were connected properly. After you have checked the drum emergency brake, follow the cables in the undercarriage and look for the point at which they combine to another single cable, this is the point where the actual cable pressure adjustment is located.

Hi: Sounds to me like you tried to start the vehicle with something disconnected in the security system. If this is the case the solution is simple. Put key in ignition and turn to the on position, leave on for EXACTLY 30 minutes... then take key out, wait 5 minutes then start vehicle. Hope this helps... please rate suggestion... ty

SOURCE: Brake pedal still goes to floor 2000 GMC Jimmy

It's very possible to be the master cylinder, the o-rings on the piston could be worn, letting the fluid seep back through instead of getting full pressure through the lines. Could also be the brake booster.
Try changing the master cylinder first, which is cheaper and easier, and see if there is a difference, you'll need to bleed the brakes again.
To check the booster,
With the engine off, pump the brakes until the pedal is hard, then hold pressure on the brake pedal and listen for air escaping, or the pedal goes slowly to the floor, Do that after the master cylinder has been changed, at least that will be eliminated.

Testimonial: "Hadn't thought about the O-rings on the rod thanks for the idea. Great Idea Thanks!"

SOURCE: how do i know if brake booster is gone ? 2001 gmc

Do you by any chance hear a hissing noise from under the dash? If so, yes, you have a bad booster. For it to do what you're saying, it would almost have to have a vacuum leak. However, if there is a problem with something in the ABS system, you should have an ABS warning light on. Also, ABS can make the pedal fade, but I've never heard of it making the pedal hard. Your diagnosis of a brake booster does sound likely, but I'll admit I can't be sure -- this is an odd one.

Testimonial: "thanks, heard a hissing that i thought was coming from under the truck -- have to check tomorrow - actually my father's truck. have to get back there"

On a 97 gmc truck when you push the brake you can hear air from the brake booster into the cab of the truck and brake travels freely to the floor

When a vehicle is turned off, the brake pedal should remain firm. However, if the driver pushes the pedal lightly and it sinks to the floor, the master cylinder has an internal leak.

How do I remove a power booster from a 97 GMC Jimmy

Un bolt master cylinder and pull forward and to side without disconnecting any lines. Get up under dash and disconnect linkage to front of booster pushrod (This can be tricky and hard on the neck and headbone). Remove vacuum check valve from booster, remove 4 nuts holding booster in place and remove unit. Installation is reverse steps.

98 jimmy slows down and stops on its own.

If the brakes are stopping the jimmy, it could be a hydraulic problem. check brake fluid level in master cylinder. If it is overfilled, fluid can expand when fluid heats up and can apply brakes. also, bad brake hose can trap pressure in caliper and apply brakes. Also check brake pedal and booster adjustments. other possibility is caliper/hardware (mechanical) is hanging up and not releasing. If drum brake in back, check adjustment and/or stuck wheel cylinder.

95 GMC Jimmy brakes are tight

The hard brake pedal is most likely a faulty power brake booster. Unless you suspect a faulty master cylinder, buy one with out it. In fact, if you suspect any other problems which might require opening the brake system (the booster does not) take it to a mechanic for repair.

The brake booster will require removal of four bolts on the fire wall (from the inside of the truck) and the removal of the master cylinder (do not remove the brake lines, simply unbolt it from its mooring). You will also have to muck about with the connecter for the pedal rod. If you feel at all unsure about doing that job, have a mechanic do it.

Good luck and hope this helps.
