Call around to your local auto parts stores, most likely one of them will read your code for free and tell you what needs to be fixed if anything. (They're in the business of selling parts, so they're hoping the check engine can be fixed by a part that you can buy from them and replace.)

Pep Boys, AutoZone, O'reilly, Advance Auto and Napa Auto have been known to read your codes for free.

Testimonial: "Not likely, everyone I've called wants to charge me to hook it up to their machine, or charge by the hour until they figure it out. It was actually a yes or no question."

Please see my edited answer, I've added a few parts places that have been claimed to read the codes for free.

There was a problem with 95-99 Saturn junction blocks. Loose fitting to pin connections in the actual connectors pulling loose which would create a similar symptom. Both under the instrument panel and in the engine compartment. You might be able to get a copy of the TSB from the Saturn dealer it is Bulletin No 03-08-45-001 issued May, 2003 Good luck.

98 Saturn SL AC/cooling fan will NOT work

Do not let this car over heat a blown head gasket will ensue. Locate and replace the fan relay, if that doesn't fix the problem unplug fan and use jumper wires to ground the plug then feed power to the positive side of plug to check fan, if that doesn't work replace the coolant temperature sensor located somewhere near the intake manifold or thermostat housing area.
