SOURCE: 2004 SATURN ION POWER STEERING COLUMN

The C0474 code refers to a steering angle sensor located at or near the base of the steering column. Check where the steering column goes through the front of dash and verify the connector is fully seated and locked.
The sensor gets its voltage from the ABS module.
Let me know if it is clean, locked and seated. Make sure there are no pushed out or bent terminals on the connector.
Check this first and we can go from there.
regards,

SOURCE: 2004 Saturn Ion - Power Steering Problem

The motor on the power steering is overheating which causes the thermal overloads to trip.

go tho the junk yard and buy a motor for a 2004 thru 206 ion or a 2004 thru 2008 chevy colbalt.

they are all the same. You may have to buy the wholle steering colum but you can remove the motor with 2 - 12mm bolts and a quick dissconnect pulg. Replace just the motor as the whole steering colum is a bit more complicated. the dealerships want you to replace the whoe steering colum, in fact that is the only way they sell the parts. It is a scam. Just the motor needs to be replaced.
I have done it on 4 different ions. try to get a motor with few as possible miles and as new as possible. I have paid between $50 and $125 for these. The dealer wants $900 fnad about $500 to install. It is very simple to do. Only 2 bolts.

SOURCE: Power steering/cold morning car wont start

Here's a few technical service bulletins regarding what your experiencing. Best part is that Saturn has sent this many technical service bulletins to the dealers, but fail to acknowledge they have a problem, that they should fix, free of charge. I believe this is the year they started or redesigned electronic steering system, and we all know what happens first year out. Sorry I don't have an answer on what you should do, but I would definitely call Saturn owner relations and quote some of those bulletins listed at the link, just to see if any retribution is offered. Owner relations number should be in manual. Good Luck & keep us posted.

SOURCE: 2005 ion power steering problem

remove electronic power steering (EPS) motor. remove the 4 bolts that hold on the motor housing. remove the housing. using a tooth brush, clean out the 'brush' dust from between the commutators. don't use cleaner spray as you might degrease the bearings. don't use anything metal to clean out the dust you might scratch or nick the commutators.

this solution has worked for over 500 miles for me. I'll keep you posted.

What pump are you checking an fluid level ? Your vehicle has electric power steering an has no pump or fluid .
Your best bet , take it to a GM dealer , had recall on parts of the EPS , electric power steering (EPS) system .
The electric power steering (EPS) system reduces the amount of effort needed to steer the vehicle. The system uses the body control module (BCM), power steering control module (PSCM), torque sensor, discrete battery voltage supply circuit, EPS motor, serial data bus, and the instrument panel cluster (IPC) message center to perform the system functions. The PSCM, torque sensor, not the EPS motor are serviced separately from each other or from the steering column. Any EPS components diagnosed to be malfunctioning requires replacement of the steering column assembly, also known as the EPS assembly.

I have a 2003 Saturn ion-3. Last year the power steering went out and the shop had me replace the steering rack for $1100. Recently it has gone out again, what else might be the problem?

My power steering went out on a 2007 ion. I took it to a GM dealership with Goodwrench service repair. There was a recall & they fixed it FREE. I haven't had a problem since. That was oct 2011.

2007 SATURN ION POWER STEERING MESSAGE. MESSAGE FALSHES AND STEERING IS TOUGH TO TURN. i TURN CAR OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND IT'S FINE UNTIL MESSAGE COMES ON AGAIN. IT MAKES NO NOISE.

  • You have an electronic power steering system.

  • Your power steering module, steering assist motor and the steering sensor could all be problems. You will have to have a scan performed to see what the exact problem is. There is no other way.

  • The power steering aides you in turning the wheel. When the light comes on there is a malfunction and this is why it is hard to turn the wheel, because the steering assistance of the power steering is gone at that time. Turning the car off just temporarily resets the PCM.

All of a sudden, while driving, slow the power steering on our 2006 Saturn Ion 2 sedan went out and the pwe str light came on; we turned the car off and restarted it and after about 30 seconds it happened...

the electric motors on the column are definitely a problem with these vehicles. The warranty coverage on these was extended and it wouldn't hurt to give your local gm dealer a call to see if you are still covered.

If they determine that you are not covered the repair isn't that costly. The motor will run you about $150 - $250 dollars and the labor will be about an hour or so to replace.

The motors are actually pretty easy to replace. They are held in with 2 bolts and take about 20 minutes to replace.

I have a 2007 Saturn Ion with a power steering issue. The car only has 31,000 miles, but fell short by 14 days of the warranty. We contacted the dealer, they ran the vin # and said the vehicle was sold on...

you can now buy just the power steering motor for $150 instead of the complete column for $600,,the motor overheats and cuts out, thats all you need, easy to install or about $150 ish laborat dealer, that will fix the cutting out and no power steering issue,,,,common,,,,,checvy has a recall on the cobalt for this concern but saturn does not even thou its the same exact part,,,,because when GM went bankrupt they are NO longer responsibile for any saturn issue,,,,,,hence,,no recall
