Can be one of over a 1000 different reasons ----need to get vehicle scanned for the trouble code the code will give you start point or assist in correcting the problem ---most auto stores offer this service for free

If the check engine light is on then there is a problem in the engine or transmission or a related system. You may be in what is called "LIMP" mode. What needs to be done is have the dealer or a well equipped shop run a fault code test and do the diagnostics associated with the code or codes.

Take this to an auto parts store and have the codes read. Then you will know exactly what the problem is. And just an FYI, if the check engine light is flashing, you should stop driving it as the computer believes that the problem can damage the vehicle. If the check engine light is on solid and not flashing, this is a less serious problem, but still should be looked at.

A flashing check engine light usually indicates an engine misfire it flashes to let you know that the problem is severe enough that you could possibly damage the catalytic converter.

You best bet is to scan the computer and find out what codes are present.

otherwise if it is running ruff you can do the basics like check for spark to each plug or check the plugs to see if they are fouled, carbon tracked, or worn out.

Should be take it by auto zone have them check for codes . It is free in most states.

Spark plug wires + spark plugs. Or/and take it to Autozone, and they'll run a check engine light scan for you, for FREE !!
