Won't turn over fast enough to start

94 Mustang, Just replaced Engine with a brand new engine, starter is brand new, battery is new as well. When we try to start it it turns over so slowly that the engine won't actually start, have checked to connections but what are we missing?

Try to Jump start it with the jumper cables and make sure your battery has enough power to turn the Engine....

Bighorn with 4gj2 engine. Why doesn't it start?

could be the battery is old and losing power, ie not enough to turn the starter motor fast enough to start. Or the starter motor itself is worn and will not turn fast enough,
ensure the connections to the battery and starter are good. if the battery is older than 5 years i would be a good idea to replace with an new one of the same power rating and size.
in winter it is often the case that old cold batteries do not perform well. if with a new battery the problem persists, remove the starter motor and have it checked, if it is defective it would have have to be removed to install a replacement.

one way to check battery power is to try and start the motor with the headlights on if the lights dim down a lot when trying to start that indicates the battery is low on power.

2005 jaguar VDP 4.0L. Very hard start. Have replaced map and crank sensor, egr valve and intake.

in what way is it hard to start does the engine turn over fast or slow, fast is low compression in the piston chambers slow can be the battery or the starter motor wearing out. ( starter motor has bushes to turn the motor these wear out and cannot turn the engine over fast enough to start.

1997 chevy s10 spins slow when cranking

Did you get a new battery with the right specifications for your truck? If so I would get the alternator checked because maybe it isn't charging your battery correctly........but first go and make sure the battery cables are #1 Clean so they make good contact on both + and - posts. #2 Make sure the cables are tight so they make good contact. If they are both good then you might have a bad ground from the batter to where it bolts to the frame/firewall.

Doesn't matter. The forks inside the starter may be missing or broke off or bad spring in starter that pushes the gear out. Try new started. Starter may have to be shimmed to make contact with flywheel. Starter may be kicking out but not engaging flywheel.

1994 Honda Prelude si starting problems

Your starter motor is either not getting power or in need of replacement. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with your car.

Also check your battery connections for no corrosion there as well as by the starter motor. Low voltage circuits in a car are extremely vulnerable to poor contact issues.

Engine turns over slowly

Try measuring battery voltage at the starter motor. Should not drop below 12V when cranking.

If does pull plugs and see if you can hand crank. If more is really tight try some very light oil in cylinders for a couple days and see if anything loosens up.

When should the starter be replaced? When the car is cold, the engine will turn but not start. Battery is new.

Hello,
You may want to try a jump start first. If the vehicle will start with a jump start it is more likely that your new battery doesn't have the MCCA, ( minimum cold cranking amps ), required to start your engine.

When it's cold out the starter needs a lot more amps to turn the engine fast enough to start.

Low CCA is seldom a problem until it's cold outside.

When ignition switch is turned to start I get a small click but starter does not engage

Hi,

If the starter or solenoid clicks but nothing else happens when you attempt to start the engine, there may not be enough amps to spin the starter. Or the starter may be bad. A poor battery cable, solenoid or ground connection, or high resistance in the solenoid itself may be the problem. A voltage check at the solenoid will reveal if battery voltage is passing through the ignition switch circuit. If the solenoid or relay is receiving battery voltage but is not closing or passing enough amps from the battery to spin the starter motor, the solenoid ground may be bad or the contacts in the solenoid may be worn, pitted or corroded. If the starter cranks when the solenoid is bypassed, a new solenoid is needed, not a starter.
Most engines need a cranking speed of 200 to 300 rpm to start, so if the starter is weak and can't crank the engine fast enough to build compression, the engine won't start. In some instances, a weak starter may crank the engine fast enough but prevent it from starting because it draws all the power from the battery and does not leave enough for the injectors or ignition system.


If the lights dim and there is little or no cranking when you attempt to start the engine, the starter may be locked up, dragging or suffering from high internal resistance, worn brushes, shorts or opens in the windings or armature. A starter current draw test will tell you if the starter is pulling too many amps.


A good starter will normally draw 60 to 150 amps with no load on it, and up to 200 amps or more while cranking the engine. The no load amp draw depends on the rating of the starter while the cranking amp draw depends on the displacement and compression of the engine. Always refer to the OEM specs for the exact amp values. Some "high torque" GM starters, for example, may have a no load draw of up to 250 amps. Toyota starters on four-cylinder engines typically draw 130 to 150 amps, and up to 175 amps on six-cylinder engines.

Starter motors good but wont turn over my1982 lincoln continental

When you say the starter motor runs, do you mean it runs fast but does not turn the engine, in that case it may be something to do with starter not engaging the ring gear.

If when the starter runs it turns the engine slowly then it could be starter is not getting enough power.

The reasons for starter motor not getting enough power can be, a bad battery, loose battery connector, stiff engine or a bad starter solenoid.
To check a bad battery, turn your head lights on and when you try to crank the engine, if the light go dim, you have a bad battery or a bad battery connection. If the lights are not affected you may have a stiff engine.
