SOURCE: In 97 mercury mountaineer, how to turn off "check engine" light
Go to the local parts store, have them check the codes (they will do this for free usually). It will tell you what sensor needs to be checked/replaced. Once the part is replaced, it will clear on its own. They can also reset the code, but it will come back if the trouble persists.
SOURCE: 2004 Mercury Mountaineer fuel gauge not working
The most likely failure that will cause your problem is the fuel level sender in the gas tank. The sender will cause both the fuel gauge problem and the check engine light to be turned on. The sender will need to be replaced to repair the problem.

SOURCE: 03 mercury mountaineer, service engine soon light
Your Service Engine Soon light has nothing to do with reminding you to change your oil. The light is controlled by the ECM (Computer) in your vehicle. It monitors various sensors in your engine and compares them to variables or programs that is in its memory. When something is not registering correctly or is outside of its parameters it will turn on a MIL(Malfunction Indicator Light)or in your case a Service Engine Soon light. You will need a OBD II ( On Board Diagnostic) reader or scanner to hook up to your diagnostic port under your driver's side footwell to read what code the ECM is putting out. Than with the code the mechanic can look up the code to see what part is sending a malfunctioning. The scanner can also read and erase the code too. You can have your code pulled up with a OBD II scanner for free from any AutoZone store.
SOURCE: Mercury mountaineer check engine light help
My 2002 M Mountaineer had the same problem and was fixed by reading the code that showed a leak in the gas tank pressure via the cap. When I replaced this with a good after market cap and drove the car for a while and it cleared itself. A mechanic told me that's not possible, but it did clear and has not lit up except on start up where it lights for a few seconds to test the bulb - a normal function.
