Day 1 was just a slight squeal when applying the brakes. Day 2, all day very loud squealing or screeching no change when applying the brakes. Day 3, slight squeal when applying brakes and also notice a low grown or grinding sometimes when coming to a slow stop or start. 4th day the car was left with our family mechanic has ALWAYS been able to diagnose and fix our carsand he cannot find anything wrong with the car. So today I brought the car home with no noises, and leave for work a few hours later and now we're back to the whistle when applying the brake and occasional grinding noise when coming to slow stop or start. Please help!...this noise is only happening on the front driver wheel
A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).
A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).
However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).
Visually check all 4 rotors (metal braking discs). make sure the pads are not worn out completely and grinding your rotors. Pads are equipped with a metal tab that, when the pads become too thin, this tabs make contact with the rotor making the noise you describe. This is how you know they need to be replaced
