The negative from the battery goes to the chassis within 12" of the battery. The live is red and goes to the fuse box and the starter. The big red wire on the starter is the positive and the smaller black wires are grounds.
On the positive side of battery Julie is where your fusible links are,you say it's getting hot,I would follow all wires, look for burnt or swollen wires, they go to starter. Here's a wiring diagram,it shows that you have 3 fusible links leaving your positive battery, they need looking at,check all wiring in line with positive battery cable.Look at diagram number 25,enlarge to see.

If you ask for a one wire delco alternator, all you have to do is connect the large wire on back of the alternator to the positive battery post on the battery. The alternator is self energizing, there for no problem with wiring up a harness. If I can help, let me know my name is Ron.>>>[email protected]
you really don't need one..... 1.Disconnect the battery 2.locate the starter. If its a v8 itll be on the driver side at the back of the engine beside the oil pan 3.there are two bolts on the bottom of the starter that you need to remove with a 9/16 socket or wrench.(support the starter when you remove the last bolt so the wires don't get broken) 4.observe the location of all of the wires attached to the starter(make a diagram so you don't forget where they go) 5.Remove the nuts that hold the wires on the starter.(make sure the ring connectors and wires are in good shape if you notice any damaged ones they should be replaced) 6. reverse procedure to install new one ..............hope this is helpfull.good luck!
don't have a wiring diagram for you , but i'll try to explain. starting with heavy gage cables---one goes to battery positive--the other heavy cable goes to starter bolt on back of bendix or 3/8 stud with nut. the small wire with 90*end goes to sol. terminal mark "I" thats ign. side comming from ign. switch. the other terminal is not used most of the time. hope this helps.
