Im working on a 97 Lesabre with the 3800. The first time i scanned it it was missing on 3 and not on any others....swapped wires with 6 and 3 ... still missed on 3. Put new plug in 3 the next day and rescanned car and now shows miss on 6 only. The wire was what looked to me to be arcd damaged ( it was black and sooty) where the plug goes to coil pack. So now focused on 6. Swapped 6 and 2 and now misses on both 6 and 2. When I swap the wires back it goes back to missing on 6 only. Any ideas why it sent me to 3 first? I plan to try a new wire on 6 and inspect the plug next.
Update to issue. The problem was the loose wire connection on coil causing the visible arc damage which made the wire and also made the coil pack fail. This is why when switching only the wires and then only the packs didnt make problem follow. New 3 6 coil pack and new #6 wire car runs great.Update to issue. First you need to determine what type of miss you have. Is it random on all cylinders, or is it restricted to one or two cylinders? Random misfire can be caused by crank or cam sensors that are starting to give out. Single cylinder misfires can be due to plugs, wires, coils (you already addressed those), as well as internal issues such as burnt or broken valves.
My only thought right now is a dirty mass air flow sensor. Beyond that it would require a scan tool on the transmission to detect if pressures are correct.
Well there are several 3.8 liter engines 8th digit in the vin tells it all Vin3,C,K,L are all different is small settle ways the most is ignition electronics Vin 3 engines only use the inner sensor ring on crank pulley Vin 3, c,k,l use both sensor rings but they are different also Changing the pulley is not recommended due to balance issues but the sensor rings are bolted on with sheer bolts that can be removed. Intake manifold design is the second most important plastic 2 piece and metal one piece are not inter change able.
You can't rule anything out yet. It could be a plug or injector among other things, but probably not low fuel pressure. If you have a code 300 and nothing else, you may have to wait until the problem gets bad enough to set additional codes. And if any of the sensors fail, such as the cam or crank sensors, you'll get a code for those to be tested.
Have the plugs been checked or replaced in the past 30,000 miles ?
code P0303 is a misfire code for cylinder # 3, Possible spark plug, wire/coil or injector problem. P0141, bank1 sensor2, is the upstream oxygen sensor, this code may have been set by the misfire of Cyl #3, the lean condition is being cause by the misfire. Fix the misfire and clear the codes and P0141 should not return. If the vehicle is equipped with Coil over plug system try swapping the coil with any one of the others, test drive and if the misfire code changes to another P0300 code ( P0301, P0302, P0304 etc...) the coil has failed and will need to be replaced.
Code P0304 Indicates a misfire in cylinder 4. The computer will notice these long before they get bad enough for the driver to notice. Check your plugs and plug wires for thightness. I know from expierence that "New" parts does not mean "Good" parts.
If you have access to a scan tool still.... swap the #1 and #4 plugs and if you still get a P0304 reading you know the misfire is likely in the #4 cyl. wiring. (A faulty injector could cause a misfire but it's less likely a culprit than the wiring) If you get P0301 code after you swap the plugs.. then you'll know it's a faulty plug.
You are mis fireing on cyl 1 and 3 if you replaced plugs and wires and coil this is going to be a fuel injector issue or valve issue. See if you can swap the injectors with known good cyl. and see if it changes. Or have a shop do a fuel injector service on it to see if it helps. It may be to late for the fuel injector service.
Update to issue. The problem was the loose wire connection on coil causing the visible arc damage which made the wire and also made the coil pack fail. This is why when switching only the wires and then only the packs didnt make problem follow. New 3 6 coil pack and new #6 wire car runs great.
