Robert, transmission and gear box are really the same thing. The transmission/gear box/transaxle drive the differential putting power to the axles driving the wheels. There are lot of combinations though

Depends on what sort of set up you have.
If there's a transfer case - it's like another gearbox on the transmission - it's the transfer case (I.e a gearbox..) that supplies power to your front wheels.
The transfer case is itself powered by the transmission. You will have a propshaft (driveshaft) running from the transfer case to the front differential.

could have stripped the shifter linkage best to know is to take it to tranny shop not something you would want to handle by yourself especially if you have never done it before.

what is the mileage on your car? and how much abuse does the car get? this is indicative of internal transmission damage, if you can you should take it to you local chevy dealership, or a trusted mechanic because this is highly technical work. unless you feel like taking your transmission apart yourself, in that case here is whats wrong. 1. your transmission linkage is out of adjustment due to either abuse or some parts are worn, or 2. or your transmission output shaft pilot bearing is damaged, causing excessive play and "Batting" your lever out of gear.
SOURCE: big noise when engage in
Hi,
I have seen the cables for the 4wd actuator stick and cause the actuator to stay part way engaged and make a bad grind noise while
driving. The 4wd actuator is under the battery and has a cable that
goes to the front differential. You can check it to make sure its
released fully and make sure there isn't vacuum going to it in 2wd.
The way you are describing it, It sounds just like the gear that
engages the 4wd inside if the differential is not pulling back all the
way. Used ones from junk yards cost around 300 dollars. Sometimes you can find a remain but it will be pricey.Have the actuator and the cable checked before you pull the diff apart.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
SOURCE: transmission don't engage on drive gear but slowly
Checking transmission fluid is always a good idea and thats where i would start. If it is full then most likely the input hub is broken in the transmission and this will most likely lead to an overhaul. You most likely have a ZF4HP22 or 24 depending on engine size. This is a tricky little unit to repair and I would avoid the "low bidder".Good luck!
