Everytime I start the car the daytime running lights come on. I know thats normal. But last night the dash lights turned off.I messed with the head light switch nothing, messed with the dimmer, nothing. Shut the car off took the key out and the restarted the car, dash lights came back on with daytime lights like they should. Drove the car back home from the store same trip and again the dash lights went out. Once I got home I shut the car off and restarted it and the dash lights came back on with head lights. I let the car run for like 10 min and nothing happened. Even turning the head lights on by hand switch didn't effect it. It does have the day light sensor on the dash but it really doesn't need it cause of the daytime light system. Is there a module for the light system or is it tied into body control module?
Hi, gm vech. are elec.complex with logic that is all there own. im a retired ford tech, and gm would drive me crazy sometimes. now some ideas, your dash light are controlled with an ecm, keep in mind, your dashlights and tail lights are on the same circut. i would check your batt. cables, if your ground cable has a high resistance it could cause issues. in fords they had bad dimmer switches that would cause the same issue. if you have someone with an obd2scanner it might have a code.hope that helps.
Testimonial: "Ok thanks, I have had a lot of rain the last few days. When I bought the car the owner did put a "cheap" battery in it.I will go through all the cars grounds,If I remember there were a lot of ground points by the battery.Lights hooked with ecm (sigh) crossing fingers. thanks again."

well Just my luck.20yrs of mechanics but my info fades around 2001.3 ground points tested good.Gound point at strut bolt good. Battery is 4yrs old but not having any problems with it. Even good ground to engine block.Under the hood is clean no leaks just road dust.Unplugged ecm and inspected, looked ok no "green" pins.Alt charges good. The Tail lights do stay on when dash lights go out.Everything works except the dash lights. today they didn't even come on so what ever the problem is its broke for good.I too have come across some weird electrical issues in my yrs of mechanicing .I was hopeing to pass the car to my son this summer so he can go to work,He's 15 so I thought it would be good first car.Guess not. I'm pretty broke so I can't afford to pay for a ghost chase at a shop.So far no mil lamp.Car still runs drives and shifts like its supposed to,so far. If anyone got an idea would sure help. thanks
