#PIP3922: Repeat DTC P0606 And P1780 Setting - keywords 00 01 02 03 04 05 DTC JB L81 MAF MIL P0606 P1780 reducedpwrmde reman saturn - (Sep 26, 2006)

Subject: Repeat DTC P0606 and P1780 Setting

Models: 2000-2005 Saturn L series with L81 V6 The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
A technician may find codes P0606 and P1780 setting. They may state that they are not able to duplicate the concern. Tech may state that when the customer is driving they report a sudden loss of power, then no throttle response, and the warning indicators come on. Tech may also state that the ECM and MAF were replaced with no change.
Recommendation/Instructions:
These codes will set if the wrong MAF was installed on the vehicle previously. This being an intermittent code the MAF may work without any concerns initially. The retailer may not be aware of 2 different part number MAF's for 2000-05 L series with L81. Compounding this is the reman sticker may fall off and GM does not cross reference the Bosch part number to theirs. Any time these codes are setting have technician verify the correct MAF is installed using the reference below
The part numbers are:
2000-03 90528435 Last 3 of Bosch # 184 (important because the reman sticker may be missing)
2004-05 24437651 Last 3 of Bosch # 087 (important because the reman sticker may be missing)
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a ""do-it-yourselfer"". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

P1780 means what on a 2002 saturn L300.... And how do you fix it

DTC P1780
Circuit Description
This DTC indicates that the engine control module (ECM) received a message from the transmission control module (TCM) to turn ON the MIL (SERVICE ENGINE SOON) telltale due to a transmission related OBD II failure. The ECM will send a message via the controller area network (CAN) link to the body control module (BCM), which will send a message over the class 2 link to the instrument panel (I/P) cluster to turn ON the MIL.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
DTC P1780 will set if the ECM received a MIL request message from the TCM over the CAN link.
DTC P1780 is a type B DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
DTC P1780 does not indicate a fault with the CAN link circuit.
DTC P1780 does not indicate a fault with the ECM.
Diagnose any TCM related DTCs first.

You need a scan tool that can read transmission control module codes .

2003 saturn L300 starts and runs for about 5 min then dies. wont start again untill it sets for 30 min. then it will run another 5min. and shut off

When it shuts off it is time to check things out. Check fuel pressure on the fuel rail and check for spark at the plugs. If no spark the coils may be bad. As the engine heats up the inside of the coil pack may be seperating or grounding themself out. If fuel pressure is low the fuel pump may be weak and on its way out. This happens to people that run there car untill the fuel light comes on.it is ******* the fuel pump because the fuel it's pumping is what cools it. You can search on google or youtube for what your particular cars fuel pressure should be.

Engine code p1780

p1780 code indicates a problem in the transmission or the communication lines between the body control module and the engine control module...If the transmission had a true fault of this type in it, it would not cause the engine to shut down.
The most likely cause is that there was a glitch. Unfortunately this will be a reoccurring problem until it is fixed. If the engine check light starts to flash that means it is in limp mode and you will probably only be running about 10 miles per hour. I would say take it to Saturn dealer unfortunately they no longer exist. Best thing to do is have a transmission shop check it out. Or automotive shop sorry I don't have better news.

2003 saturn L300 p1780

DTC P1780 (3.0L (L81))

To improve shift feel, the transmission control module (TCM) may request that the engine control module (ECM) reduce engine torque during shift events. When such a request is received, the ECM responds by retarding the base ignition timing and notifying the TCM that the request has succeeded. If the ECM is unable to comply with the request, the ECM sends the TCM a message that the request has failed.
The torque reduction request is sent to the ECM through a communication network called the controller area network (CAN). Two circuits are used to communicate CAN data between the ECM and TCM. A fault in the CAN will not cause DTC P1780 to set by itself. If a CAN fault occurs, other DTCs will set before DTC P1780.
When the TCM receives a torque reduction failure message from the ECM, then DTC P1780 will set. DTC P1780 is a type C DTC. Take your pick of which you think this code is for , this or the TSB - technical service bulletin. What need to hook up scan tool an data PID'S - Do you know what PID'S are ? sensor data read on a scan tool .

Car stopped running, engine light on the dash was on about 200 mi

there is no way to know for sure without some troubleshooting and since your engine light is lit which im assuming is the check engine light you can have someone with an obd scanner pull the codes and go from there that is pretty much your only option at this point
