BATTERY IS DEAD. WHY AND HOW WHO KNOWS?
WE CHARGE THEM USING A TOOL CALLED CHARGER
AND IF THAT FAILS TO MAKE OLD BATTERY CRANK ENGINE
THE BATTERY IS REPLACED. NOW.
EML IS CALLED CEL.SES AND MIL LAMP
IN ENGLISH IT IS CHECK ENGINE LAMP.
IT JUST STARTS SO THERE IS THE 1 KEY TEST DONE.
WHEN IT STARTS AGAIN
WE WHIP OUT THE OLD DMM,VOLT METER.
AND CHECK BATTERY LUGS FOR 13 TO 15VDC AT IDLE
BELOW 13VDC THE ALTERNATOR IS DEAD OR ITS FUSES BLOWN.
THERE ARE 6 CAUSES OF NO CRANKS.

PRNDL SWITCH BAD (AKA. PARK NEUTRAL SWITCH)
CRANK IN NEUTRAL NOW, DOES ENGINE START?

OR BAD BATTERY CABLES OR LUGS LOOSE OR RUSTY.
THE BATTERY WILL BE DEAD IF ALTERNATOR FAILS

MOST CARS IF ALT FAILS AND WE DRIVE 30 MINUTES AND ENGINE DIES, FOR DEAD BATTERY./ NIGHT TIME LESS.
AT IDLE THE DAYS CHARGE/BATTERY LAMP MUST NOT GLOW.

you may need to enter the radio code, if you do not have it you need to bring the registration to the dealer and they can call and get it for you. The radio locks so if it stolen it is useless.
have you tested the alternator? or just tried to jump start from another vehicle? or if you have access to another car battery that you know is good and starts other car try it. and if the battery does start your truck while it is still running disconnect the positive cable, truck should stay running if it dies your alternator is no good replace it. you can also take alternator to Auto zone or O'Rilley's Chiefs almost any car parts store they should test for free. check battery the water level of course if it is that kind you have a dead cell ,how about the cables? if there is corrosion you can cut cable coating to check if there is no corrosion wrap it up with electrical tape, good luck. hey you also want to check to see if there may be an aux. light that stays on like glove box, dome light ,radio.that is running down battery
You say "it cranked for about 3 seconds and died as if I turned off the key" did it actually start and then die? Have there been any clues (unusual happenings) recently that might relate to the current problem?
Is there a reason the battery went dead? was something left on? Lights, etc?
Unfortunatly, the Aux Battery on Prius is susecptible to premature replacements. All the Aux battery does is "power-up" the various ECU's which in turn allows the HV battery to start the car. The AUX battery does NOT operate the starter.
