After a 60 mile trip; bronco would not go backward.Forward and neutral was no problem.fluid level ok.trans engaged in reverse,just won't move more than a few inches. HAVE OWNED FOR 5 MONTHS. Only other transmission glitch is it shifts frequently in the 25 to 35 mph area. It happened suddenly.It seems to over-rev....not quite neutral but definitely in reverse I have had to use the 4wd quite a bit over the last few days-24 inches of snow!
SOURCE: ford transmission 86 4wd will not shift to high gear
It is hard to say from your description what the problem is ... could be linkage issue ... could be trans is going as is with the other poster ...
Losing overdrive. Clutches (bands/clutches) have had it. Be careful driving without that top gear ... doing too high a speed without the appropriate gear causes extra stress on your engine that could accelerate further problems. Try to do only driving at a low enough speed that the top gear is not missed ... will help the vehical last as long as possible.

First,look for an fashion transmission shop that will do REAL transmission filter change,
DO NOT use the quick flush machine.
It will kill a good working transmission.
=================
1/2 hour before your appointment,add a can of Transfix (blue can) to free up the particles and lube the passage.
Drive gently, and pass though all gears when there is no traffic,.
=================
Ask the shop to blow out the trans line + cooler.
Use Amsoil ATF if you can handle the price,
Do rear diff lube.
Check + lube WORN OUT universals.........
Good luck.
SOURCE: F150 - won't move in reverse or drive out of 1st gear
i have seen those trannys go at 30,000-
SOURCE: auto transmission slips then grabs
first thing i would try is changing the transmission fluid out and filter, i beleive its almost 8 quarts. use a full quart of lucas transmission additive with the new fluid. if this doesn't help, the transmission will either need replaced or rebuilt
