How do I pull the heater core on a 1991 Ford Explorer XL?

Put the adjuster in last. That is how I do it. It should be no problem to spread the shoes far enough apart. Then adjust til it is a snug fit to get the drum back on.

1. NOTE: If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 .
   Drain the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 .

1. Remove the heater water hoses.
   1. Squeeze the clamps and pull the hoses off.
   1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the water control valve.

1. Remove the A/C evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to Section 412-03 .

   1. Remove the heater core cover to air plenum screws.
   1. Lift off the cover.

1. Remove the heater core (18476).

remove the dash open the blower motor box pop the locate the coolant lines going into the fire wall remove them and cap them off mark which line comes from were go back in the cab and pull the core out install new core reconnect the lines and close the dash back up also check the coolant level and top off as needed

remove the glovebox and there should be a cover for the heater core there is five or six screws that hold it on remove the heater hoses and pull the heater core out

pull the shifter out of the top of the transmission and try to move the shift rails to nuetral, if thy won't move u must have an internal broken part jamming the shift trails.

remove the heater core lines the two hoses that go to the heater core, take a splice tube either metal our plastic your part store will have either one. take the splice tube and install it in one of the lines add some hose to that tube make the hose long enough to run out side of the engine compartment and on to the ground. take the other hose and install a flushing tee, hook up to a garden hose and trun the water on . what you are trying to do is flush the heater core , you are also looking for blockage off the heater core, if you little to no flow i would suggest replaceing the heater core
