Trouble changing gears and not in first gear without turning off the car.

Got up one morning and would not go in to reverse even with the car off. Then got it where could go forward and would not go in first with car on. So everytime stop at the light had to turn it off to put it in first. A few times trouble going into 5th on highway that same day. So I have parked it till find out what going on.

It's a suzuki grand vitara 2004. I put in subject. I check fluid and it was empty and it was full two weeks ago when had all fluids checked. So I had added some fluid and pump clutch. Check fluid again still to line. I tried pumping it more and still no change in fluid level. There was a change in how clutch felt. Like it back to normal. Drove it around and changed gears good. Let set fluid still good. Went out for awhile drove it for 30 minutes. Still great. It set for a few hours. Came out to go home started doing it again. Check fluid still to line. It acted up driving home giving trouble go into gears. Stop pump clutch with car off it was back to normal seem. Stop at stop sign went put first mad loud noise at back and kicked out gear.

Reverse gear?

This could be due to the gear box or clutch. If this is a new car it may just need adjusting. If it is not a new car they maybe worn down and need replacing.

Do you let the engine RPM drop before selecting reverse? This is really normal and nothing to worry yourself over.

Hard to get into reverse

try shifting in to first and then reverse. reverse might be worn out. you can have that gear replaced without replacing the whole transmission.

Rover Gearbox stuck

if this is an auto tranny, you may want to make sure this is on driv. possible causes of this is the transmission solenoid or the gear selector as it is stuck on reverse. best if you will have it checked by a professional as the location of the parts mentioned is hard to reach without specific tools.
