Probably way overdue for a service, take it to a properly qualified and licensed mechanic you know and trust.

Check your fuel pressure, there are Relays to check. Sometimes the pump is so weak that it delivers enough to start the engine and can not keep up. It is also built to shut down the fuel if the engine dies.

When you turn the key, you should hear the fuel pump run. As for the smoke, with the automatic shut-offs occurring, there is moisture and incomplete combustion gases leaving the tailpipe.

If it was a fuel shortage the engine would rev but to limited speed. This is a lack of air to throttle body. Check for clogged air filter and all the piping and the throttle body.

does it have three second fuel pump run when you turn key to run position/ in between you should let i rest 5 or so seconds then try it again also some of these cadilacs have oil pressure sending unit wich takes the duty of keeping fuel pressure up is fuel pressure lowering as engine quits eg. rev up some in your few seconds of running while the engine is quit momentum keeps it turning for a short time see if you r pressure maintain thru the wind down

If the car sits for two days or more will it start with little issue? I only ask this as I noted the year of your car; with time the fuel injectors will leak. Over night the engine can then flood but once we turn it over for a time or two and then walk away we allow the fuel to evaporate out of the cylinders letting the car starts. If this is the case try starting the car with the gas pedal fully pressed. Keep it fully down as you try to start the car (this shuts off the fuel injectors) turn over the engine 5-8 seconds (keep the pedal down) and then wait 10-15 seconds before trying again. Remember to keep the gas pedal down, try this 6-8 times to see if she'll start (if it does let go of the gas pedal not to over rev the engine) If this is the case you'll need to have your injectors replaced.

Its because that the engine is very cold, try to worm it up more time before you start driving.
