Could be either, a transmission problem or transfer case problem. Someone will probably have to remove the transfer case to find out. The torque converter, pump, valve body, or various parts in the transmission could have failed. The transfer case could be stuck between 2wd and 4wd or could have a broken gear.
You should not drive a car if the check engine light comes on and you do not know what the problem is. In some cases the check engine light means a serious problem and I know could cost a lot of money to repair. Mine came on and cost $800 dollars to repair as I tried to drive it.
hello toy. remove the air filter and manually open the flutter valve while a friend turns the key and starts it up for you. often that flutter valve needs a wee bit of WD-40 or other lube to work properly. joe
If you have not adjusted the valves that would be a good place to start, 117,000 is not high miles for your engine, but valve lash should be done every 60,000 at least.
