It is a difficult process to check the correct operation of a thermal fan clutch.
Mostly if it is suspected the clutch is not working as it should and the age and the mileage of the car is significant it is best to replace the unit.

The clutch would be suspected if strange noises are heard that can be traced to the fan or if some engine overheating is being experienced, mostly at low speed or extended periods of idling.

To check the fan meets specification, first you need to know the temperature the clutch is designed to fully engage and then by whatever means available the fan clutch must be raised to that temperature and force applied to ensure direct drive has been achieved.

Testimonial: "Thank you for your reply, Vernon Taylor, you most likely saved me from an expensive miskake. It is definitely not my fan clutch, more likely my thermostat is stuck or no good. Thanks again."

How to tell when you have a bad fan clutch

Open the hood while motor is cooling and grab fan blade if it spins really freely you need a new one. Provide you have a fan clutch, and not an electronic fan motor sorry just have to put it out there some folks mistake a electric fan for a clutch fan. Clutch fans are designed with a spring on the front of them, that tightens and forces the fan to pull more air into the engine compartment and when your fan clutch is working well you can hear the whine they make when in hot days with lots of traffic and you may see a little difference in temp but probably not enough to notice

How can i check the fan clutch to see if it is bad ?

First off...do not follow some of the posters on youtube telling you to grab a moving fan blade with your fingers. Good way to lose fingers doing that.
I am going to post a link for a youtube video that will give you a bit of direction on how to safely determine if you fan clutch is bad or almost bad.

Cooling fan sensor is sending a message to the reader board I have plugged it in to the diagnostic machine and tells me code 1484

It's very likely that the fan clutch is going bad, this is common problem on Trailblazers. This is a electrically operated clutch and a relatively expensive repair item.

2004 santa fe AC only blows cold for a minute or two, then continues to blow air, but no longer cold....tried refrigerant, but didn't solve the problem....Any ideas?

I would first make sure you didnt over fill the system, you may have to exvacuate the system and then recharge it, then watch to make sure the cooling fan is colling condensor, if fan is not working that may be the problem, next if fan is working i would check for power at clutch, this will tell you if the clutch is bad or if its loosing power to clutch, you should have gauge to watch the hi and low side preasure readings.

Bad Clutch Fan? Rear ac/heat don't work front only works on 4

The fan clutch isnt engaged at all times, therefore it may be normal to hold it in place (not recommended). On these trailblazer's 4.2L engine the fan clutch is electronically controlled. Usually when this vehicle's fan clutch malfunctions, there is a random ticking noise while idling or at a stop, also the "service engine soon" may turn on. As for the the fan speed problem, this may be a faulty blower resistor malf (typical) or climate control unit may be faulty. Hopefully this helps!!

Fan cluth or fan assembly

I have a 2004 trailblazer and it keeps over heating at stop lights or while driving slow. I have replaced the thermostat and water pump, but this issue still shows up. It is fine while driving down the highway at 55-65 mph. I have also cleaned the radiator and blew through the fins to clean out the dirt and bugs. Not sure if clutch is operating correctly. How can one tell if it is and are these electric? I know there are approx 5 wires running to the front of the clutch, but not sure if this gets a voltage signal to engage the clutch fan. Any ideas?
