My 94 toyota runs well however, it recently stalled and left me stranded. I got it running however know it idles very rough and produces black smokeduring idle. also the check engine light came on!
I have replaced the starter, unplugged and repluged the oxygen sensor and dicconnected the alarm
Re: My 94 toyota runs well however, it recently stalled...
Could be several different things including injector problems.
The best thing to do is to have someone check the engine computer for trouble codes. The codes tell the mechanic what to test.

1. Error Code 24. Intake Air Temperature Sensor.
Solution: Check the following:
- IAT Connector and wiring.
- Intake Air Temperature Sensor.
- Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.
- ECM. 2. Rough Idling when the engine is hot. The following are the reasons due to which the engine can perform bad when it is hot.
- Fuel pump control circuit.
- Fuel pump pressure.
- Fuel injectors.
- Non Return Valve clogged, located on the lower side of car chassis above the fuel tank.
- Engine compression, valve clearance, spark plugs.
The previous owner has screwed things up by changing the air intake and eliminating the air temp sensor. The car's computer depends on a series of sensors to determine what fuel mixture it should command, and now it can't do that properly.
When the car is cold, it knows from the coolant temp, and it sends plenty of fuel, but when hot it is getting the mixture wrong.
Restore the air intake to original, with the correct sensors, as it should run OK.
If not, then go looking for a vacuum leak or an air leak in the air intake hose and plenum somewhere.
It can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump.Or its engine related issues,--------------- Check the help link mentioned below to troubleshoot the problem :------
there are many things that cause this, so it is best to have it scanned if light is on. but it may be a bad coolant tempurature sensor the symtoms are --- if it is bad it will run to rich, run rough at idle, and produce black smoke. engine may stall out. a maf sensor may cause this also. just get car scanned to find problem code. if it is white smoke check for oil in anti-freeze, if so it may be a blown head gasket. but if that is bad it will over heat. have a good day!!
Idle air control valve only controls air into the engine while idling. If your vehicle is running rough and skips, its misfiring. Make sure that the new plugs are properly gapped and timing is set right on the distributor side, intake hose isnt leaking. Re-inspect the sparkplugs for fouling (black, burnt, brown etc). if ok, have the computer scanned for the error at autozone (free). Post the code online...hopefully this helpd
