How do I remove transmission? - 2003 Chevrolet Impala

I am going to assume an automatic tranny. Here is the long procedure.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable(s).
2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
3. Remove the skidplate(s) if fitted.
4. Remove the skidplate support crossmember, if fitted.
5. Remove any exhaust pipes and crossover pipes that would interfere with transmission removal.
6. Disconnect the fluid cooler lines at the transmission.
7. Remove the starter motor.
8. On Ram: remove the engine-to-transmission struts, if fitted.
9. On Dakota and Durango:
   1. Support the engine with a suitable jack device and wooden block.
   2. Remove the bolts attaching the engine-to-transmission brackets to the transmission.
   3. Remove the bolt and nut securing each engine-to-transmission bracket to the motor mounts.
   4. Remove the engine-to-transmission brackets from the front axle, if fitted.
   5. Loosen the brackets on each side of the engine block.
10. Disconnect and remove the crankshaft position sensor. Retain the sensor attaching bolts.
11. Remove the torque converter access cover.
12. If the transmission is being removed for rebuilding, remove the oil pan and drain the fluid. Reinstall the pan before removing the unit to protect internal components.
13. Remove the fill tube bracket bolts and pull the tube out of the transmission. Retain the fill tube seal.
14. On 4x4 vehicles, remove the bolt attaching the transfer case vent tube to the converter housing.
15. Mark the torque converter and drive plate for assembly alignment. Note that the bolt holes in the crankshaft flange, drive plate, and torque converter all have one offset hole.
16. Rotate the crankshaft CW until the converter bolts are accessible. Then remove the bolts one at a time. Rotate the crankshaft with a socket wrench on the dampener bolt.
17. Matchmark the driveshaft(s) and yokes or flanges for assembly alignment, then disconnect and remove them. On 4x4 vehicles, remove the front driveshaft as well.
18. Disconnect the wires from the park/neutral position switch and the transmission solenoid.
19. Disconnect the gearshift rod and torque shaft assembly from the transmission.
20. Disconnect the throttle valve cable from the transmission bracket and throttle valve lever.
21. On 4x4 models, disconnect the shift rod from the transfer case shift lever.
22. Support the rear of the engine with safety stands or a heavy-duty jack.
23. Raise the transmission slightly with a service jack to relieve the load on the crossmember and supports.
24. Remove the bolts securing the rear support and cushion to transmission and crossmember.
25. Raise the transmission slightly, slide the exhaust hanger arm from the bracket and remove the rear support.
26. Remove the bolts attaching the crossmember to the frame. Remove the crossmember.
27. On 4x4 vehicles, remove the transfer case.
28. Attach a small C-clamp to the edge of the bell housing to hold the converter in place during transmission removal. Otherwise the front pump bushing might be damaged.
29. Remove the converter housing bolts.
30. Carefully work the transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off the engine block dowels.
31. Lower the transmission assembly and remove it from the vehicle.
32. To remove the torque converter, remove the C-clamp from the edge of the bell housing and carefully slide the torque converter out of the transmission.

Most of the shift solenoids are located under the "side" pan of the transmission, not the underside transmission pan. The side pan is difficult to access and might best be handled by someone who has removed this type of cover before.

The transmission is transversely mounted in these vehicles. The mount that secures the transmission to the body is also supporting the engine. If you want to remove the transmission without also removing the engine you will have to support the engine once you remove the transmission mount. You will need to remove the drivers side wheel, caliper, and rotor. You then need to remove the drivers side CV shaft. You will need to separate the lower ball joint in order to remove the shaft and to provide working room to separate the transmission from the engine. You need to disconnect the Shift cable (automatic) or slave cylinder (manual) from the transmission. You must separate the passengers side CV shaft from the transmission, but you do not need to full y remove it. Ensure that you do not separate the inner CV joint when pulling the transmission free from the inner splines. Remove the flywheel shield plate. If automatic transmission, unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel. Disconnect any electrical connections from the transmission. If automatic transmission, disconnect the hydraulic lines running to the radiator. Unbolt the transmission from the engine at the bell housing. Automatic transmissions will come out fairly easy...manuals you must pull back to disengage the transmission splines from the clutch disc.

• Remove the TV cable or transmission throttle cable from the carburetor or throttle body. Remove the upper bolt holding the transmission dip stick but do not remove the tube. Disconnect the negative cable to the battery. Drain the transmission fluid by removing the transmission pan. Replace the pan after draining the fluid.
  Remove the shift linkage and the wires to the neutral safety switch. Remove the speedometer cable by unscrewing the cap at the point it enters the drive gear in the tailshaft. If it has an electronic speedometer, disconnect the electrical connector.
  

• Install the engine support stand above the engine. Remove the CV joints. Remove all electrical connectors from the transmission. Remove the bolts in the torque converter. Place the floor jack under the transmission. Raise the transmission just enough to support it. Remove the transmission mounts. Lower the transmission enough to have access to remove all the transmission bolts. On a rear wheel drive vehicle, remove the bolts in the bottom of the transmission mount. Raise the transmission enough to remove the cross member.
  Once the bolts are out remove the cross member and then lower the transmission. Remove the dip stick tube from the transmission by lifting up. If it is hard to come out tap its mounting bracket with something and it will come up and out. Support the transmission securely on the jack. Using a flat head, separate the transmission from the engine. Lower the transmission.

  but you can also just pull the motor and trans for better access ive also got an 85 chevy im about to do some work on ganna pull and rebuild the motor which is a first for me so if u know any one i could also get some tips from help would be awsome thank you
  

1. Remove the hub cap and bolt the wheel back in.
2. Punch out the spindle nut lock and loosen the spindle nut.
3. Raise and support the vehicle and block the rear tires.
4. Remove the wheel.
5. Drain the transmission.
6. Remove the all the damper fork nuts and all the brake hose nuts on the damper fork and on the shock absorber.
7. Remove the damper fork.
8. Remove the driver side and passenger side front suspension flange nut inside the engine bay and slide the upper arm out
9. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the passenger side and remove the passenger drive shaft spline from the hub.
10. Separate the inner driveshaft from the transmission with a large screw driver (or crow bar).
11. Remove the passenger side drive shaft. Do not pull.
12. Remove the front radius rod.

Under the car.

1. Remove the center beam.
2. Remove the torque converter cover, the control cable holder and remove shift control cable.
3. Remove the drive plate bolts and four transmission housing bolts.

Inside the engine bay.

1. Place a transmission jack or several small jacks under the transmission.
2. Disconnect all the electrical connectors.
3. Remove the speed sensor gear shaft but leave the hoses on.
4. Remove the distributor and mark the distributor shaft with a razor or a diamond etcher, usually on the head side or both.
5. Remove the throttle control lever cable.
6. Remove the transmission cooler hoses mounting bolts and their 4 washers.
7. Remove the starter.
8. Remove the all the transmission housing bolts.
9. If the transmission won't come out remove a horizontal side engine mounting bolt and raise oil pan (with a wooden block between the oil pan and jack) until the transmission clears.
10. Lower the transmission into the transmission jack.
11. With the driver side front suspension flange out of the way, turn the steering towards the right then remove the driver side inner drive shaft with a large flathead screw driver.
12. Lower the low profile transmission jack and slide the transmission and the jack from under the car. Don't loose the two dowel pins.
13. Block all transmission fluid ports from leakage and dust and dirt.
14. If repairs are being done repair the transmission in a dust, sand free environment.
    

Removal & Installation 4L60E/4L65E To Remove:

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Transmission fluid
   • Transmission oil level indicator tube and seal from the transmission
   • Plug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
   • Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Shift cable end from the transmission shift lever ball stud
   • If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft.
   • Rear propeller shaft.
2. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
3. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Starter motor.
   • Transfer case, if equipped.
4. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
5. Remove the transmission mount nuts.
6. Remove the transmission crossmember.
7. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Torque converter access plug 4L60E/4L65E removal
     
     
   • Flywheel to torque converter bolts
   • The two bolts securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission
   • The transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness from the transmission
   • The stud and the bolt securing the transmission to the engine
   • The six studs and one bolt securing the transmission to the engine. Install tool J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter. Pull the transmission straight back.
   • The transmission from the vehicle
8. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines when you remove the transmission.

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   • Tool J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
   • Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the tool from the transmission.
3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
4. Install or connect the following:
   • Six studs and one bolt securing the transmission to the engine. Tighten the studs and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
   • Stud and bolt securing the transmission to the engine. Tighten the stud and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
   • Flywheel to torque converter bolts. Tighten the stud and the bolt to 46 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
   • Torque converter access plug.
   • Transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.
   • Two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission. Tighten the bolt to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
   • Two bolts securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
   • Install the transmission crossmember. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
5. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.
6. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
7. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter
   • Transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission
   • If equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft.
   • The rear propeller shaft
   • The shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud
8. Unplug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
9. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube and seal to the transmission.
10. Tighten the oil pan bolts and fill the transmission with transmission fluid.
11. Lower the vehicle.

4L80E/4L85E To Remove:

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Transmission fluid
   • Transmission oil level indicator tube and seal from the transmission
2. Plug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
3. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Shift cable from the transmission shift lever ball stud
   • If 4WD vehicle, remove the propeller shaft.
   • If RWD vehicle, remove the propeller shaft.
   • The transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission
4. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
5. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Starter motor
6. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
7. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • The two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission
   • The transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness from the transmission
   • One nut and one bolt securing the transmission brace to the engine bracket and transmission
   • The two bolts securing the torque converter cover to the engine
   • The four bolts securing the torque converter cover to the transmission
   • The six flywheel to torque converter bolts
   • The two bolts and nut securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission
   • The stud and the bolt on the right side securing the transmission to the engine
   • The remaining six studs and the one bolt securing the transmission to the engine
   • Tool J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter
   4L80E/4L85E removal
   
   
8. Pull the transmission straight back. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
9. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines when you remove the transmission.

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   • Tool J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter
2. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
3. Raise the transmission into place and remove the tool from the transmission.
4. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
5. Install or connect the following:
   • Six studs and one bolt securing the transmission to the engine. Tighten the studs and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
   • The stud and bolt on the right side securing the transmission to the engine. Tighten the stud and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
   • Six flywheel to torque converter bolts. Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
   • The two bolts securing the torque converter cover to the engine. Tighten the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
   • The four bolts securing the torque converter cover to the transmission. Tighten the stud and the bolt to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
   • The transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.
   • The two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission. Tighten the bolt to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
   • The two bolts and nut securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission. Tighten the bolts and nut to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
   • The flywheel to torque converter bolts.
   • One nut and one bolt securing the transmission brace to the engine bracket and transmission. Tighten the bolts and nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
6. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.
7. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter motor
8. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
9. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission.
10. Install or connect the following:
    • The transfer case
    • The rear propeller shaft
    • The shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud
11. Unplug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
12. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube and seal to the transmission.
13. Tighten the oil pan bolts and fill the transmission with transmission fluid.
14. Lower the vehicle.

Removal & Installation To Remove:
Transmission mounting on 2.2L engines

Transmission mounting on 4.3L engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle safely using jackstands.
3. Drain the transmission fluid.
4. Remove the driveshaft from the transmission (2WD) and transfer case, if equipped (4WD or AWD).
5. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
6. Remove the shift cable from the transmission control lever and bracket.
7. Remove the nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the crossmember.
8. Remove the bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission.
9. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold(s).
10. If equipped, remove the bolts securing the converter pan cover to the transmission.
11. Remove the 3 bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.
12. Remove the bolt, clip, and strap securing the three fuel lines and transmission vent hose to the transmission case.
13. Remove the bolts and nut securing the transmission to the engine.
14. Remove the oil filler tube and seal from the transmission.
15. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines from the transmission. Plug the lines and the ports in the transmission.
16. Unplug the wiring harness connectors from the transmission.
17. Inspect for any other wiring, brackets etc. which may interfere with the removal of the transmission.
18. Since the transmission acts as a rear engine mount, properly support the rear of the engine with an underbody support of other suitable support before attempting to remove the transmission. Otherwise the rear of the engine may pitch downward and components on the rear of the engine and on the firewall may be damaged.
19. Remove the transmission from the engine by pulling the transmission rearward to disengage it from the locator dowel pins on the back of the block. Carefully lower the transmission from the vehicle. Use care that the torque converter does not fall out of the front of the transmission

You'll need to remove the axleshafts. Remove the battery and tray. Disconnect the clutch and shifter from the transmission. Unbolt the starter from the transmission. Support the motor and place a jack under the transmission. Disconnect the transmission mount. Remove the bellhousing bolts and unplug any connectors, also remove the insepection cover. Seperate the transmission from the motor, move the transmission back to get the input shaft out of the clutch disc and lower the transmission down.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
3. Disconnect the range selector cable from the transmission bracket and from the transmission range select lever. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement .
4. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft in Propeller Shaft.
5. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
6. Remove the transfer case if equipped. Refer to the appropriate Transfer Case Replacement in Transfer Case:
• Transfer Case Replacement (Selectable Four Wheel Drive) . • Transfer Case Replacement (Auto Four Wheel Drive ) . • Transfer Case Replacement (Manual Four Wheel Drive) .



7. Gasoline Engine--Remove the following components:
7.1. Two bolts 7.2. Two washers 7.3. One nut 7.4. The transmission to engine brace



8. Diesel Engine--Remove the following components:
8.1. Two bolts 8.2. Two washers 8.3. One nut 8.4. The transmission to engine brace
9. Remove the transmission rear mount.
10. Remove the frame crossmember.
11. Remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds. Remove the muffler assembly from the exhaust pipe, if required. Refer to Exhaust System.




12. For the 5.0L Gasoline Engine: Remove the six bolts securing the converter cover to the transmission.
13. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement in Engine Electrical.
14. For the 4.3L Gasoline Engine: Remove the dust plug at the end of the starter mounting port in order to gain access to the converter bolts.




15. For the Diesel Engine and 7.4L/5.7L Engines: Remove the four bolts securing the converter cover to the transmission.
16. Mark the flywheel and the torque converter alignment.




17. Remove the bolts that attach the torque converter to the engine flywheel.




18. Remove the transmission vent hose.
19. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the vehicle speed sensors and from the park neutral position switch.
20. Remove all vehicle electrical harness wires, harness clips, tubes, and brackets that may interfere with the removal of the transmission.
21. Remove the fluid fill tube and the fill tube seal from the transmission. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
22. Plug the fluid fill tube opening in the transmission.
23. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler pipes from the transmission. Refer to the oil cooler pipe quick connect fittings removal procedure in Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
24. Plug the transmission oil cooler pipe connectors in the transmission case.
25. Install the J 21366 in order to keep the torque converter from sliding off of the transmission turbine shaft.
26. Support the engine with a suitable jack stand before removing the transmission from the engine.




27. 5.0L and 5.7L Gasoline Engine: Remove the studs and bolts securing the transmission to the engine.




28. 4.3L Gasoline Engine: Remove the studs and bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
29. Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
30. Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
31. Flush the transmission oil cooler and the pipes whenever you remove the transmission for overhaul, or replacement of the torque converter, the pump, or the transmission case. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing .
32. Clean the transmission case using a solvent dampened cloth. Do not allow solvent to enter the transmission.
33. Air dry the transmission.
34. Clean all hardware and the flywheel cover using solvent. Air dry all the parts.
35. Inspect all the components for wear and damage.
36. Inspect all the seals and the fittings for signs of wear.
37. Inspect the torque converter for stripped or broken weld nuts.
38. Inspect the transmission case for cracks.

This is the prosses to remove and install your Transmission.

1---Disconnect negative Battery cable. Remove Air cleaner. Disconnect shift cable from Transmission. Raise and support Vehicle. Drain Transmission fluid. Disconnect shift Linkage. Mark rear drive shaft for installation reference and fremove from vehicle. Mark front drive shaft and Remove from transfer case.
Warning.. ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection related component DO NOT allow fuel to contact electrical components.

2-- Relieve fuel pressure, and remove fuel lines from the Bracket support at catalistyc converter
And remove the bracket. support transmission with transmission jack or any compatible.
Remove transmission crossmember.
NOTE .. DO NOT stretch or damage any cables, wires or other components when lowering transmission.

3-- Lower transmission far enough to provide clearence for other components. remove dipstick tube and seal. cover opening in transmission. remove speedometer harness. remove electrical connectors from transmission. remove cooler lines, and cap all openings. remove starter motor.

4-- Remove transfer case shifter and move it aside, Remove transmission support braces. Note braces locatoin for installation. Remove converter housing cover. Mark flexplate( flywhell) and Torque converter for alingment during installation, Remove flywheel to torque converter BOLTS.

Remove transmission to Engine BOLTS. note location of any brackets or clips and move them aside. Slide transmission straight back, off locating pins, remove transmission from vehicle.

6-- To install, reverse removal procedure. Torque converter must be against flywheel and rotate
FREELY by HAND, ensure all reference mark aling. and tighten all BOLTS..

NOTE. In some cases is nessesary remove the Transfer case before the transmission.
The transfer case is attached at the transmission with six Bolt .....
