My 2006 Caravan temperature gauge goes to red - engine is not overheating. Kick it into a lower gear (automatic trans) and the gauge comes back down. Is it likely the coolant sensor?

3.3l No leaks, no smell. Runs strong while in drive, won't rev past 3000 in neutral.

Could be.. is the system FULL? Air in it can cause some odd things. When engine and coolant are COLD (as in after sitting over night), open the radiator cap. Top off the overflow res with a 50/50 antifreeze / water mixture to HOT mark. Start engine, turn heat to hot and fan to high. Top off RADIATOR with same 50/50 mixture slowly & gradually. As the coolant circulates, it should bring any AIR trapped in the system (from heater core & engine block) to the radiator where you can replace it with the 50/50 mix. Once the coolant is HOT and stays level - about an inch under the opening, close the radiator. Monitor the overflow res and add as needed. Good luck!

Testimonial: "Thanks. No rad cap. Fill is the plastic bottle. The system has not been touched since coolant strength test last fall. It's been through last winter with lots of -20 temps and then all this summer when we had 4 or 5 weeks of +30 celsius temps."

Temperature gauge

check the circuit to the tem p sender unit by removing the wire at the sender and turning on the ignition touch the wire to the head . The gauge should got o hot. This indicates that the wire is ok . Remove and replace the sender unit as it is shorting out inside and is not showing a resistance. The higher resistance __cold water --the lower the gauge reading. The lower resistance the more current allowed through so the gauge goes up

I have a 2006 Cadillac DTS my temperature gauge goes up and down but the car never overheats. When the needle is in the red the car putters but when the needle fall it rides smooth again

Actually, by your very description of the symptoms the car IS overheating. The temperature gauge should NEVER be "in the red" as this is too hot for the engine. The "puttering" you describe is the engine laboring to stay running in the overheated condition. This is shortening engine life dramatically. It sounds like you may have a thermostat that is not opening completely, or a cooling fan that is not operating correctly. If a fan problem it could be either the fan motor itself or the coolant temperature sensor that turns the fan on. It is imperative that you get this looked at IMMEDIATELY. The engine on your Cadillac has aluminum heads and they are easily warped or cracked by heat. A third problem you could have is a low coolant level. Never trust the sensors in the overflow bottles. If the coolant in the reservoir gets depleted, then the system develops air pockets which cause overheating and erratic gauge operation. If this is your problem, topping off the reservoir and purging the air in the system should clear things up. Be advised, however, you should also be on the lookout for system leaks if this occurs.

I have a automatic 1999 pontiac grand am gt. the car and drives good until it heats up. then the gears shift extremely hard. and when sitting in idle you can hear a loud winding noise coming from my...

Check the transmission fluid level. Also check the rear differential if your car has one ( I think the 99's were still rear wheel drive) for fluid. If either of these are low, the fact that things are fine indicates that the low fluid level is causing problems. Also, the trans fluid should be a nice pink color. If it isn't then the transmission is not in good shape and should be looked at again by the rebuilder. If the fluid levels are fine, have the rebuilder check the trans again to see if he missed something.

The issue with the temp gauge is entirely separate except if you mean that the car begins to heat up when the shifting problems are occurring. If the temp gauge goes way up then comes down quickly regardless of how the car is being driven, the thermostat may be sticking and should be replaced. If the car is hard to drive and then starts overheating, the transmission may well be defective and causing the engine to work harder than it should.

My 2006 hhr temperature goes up too often.

There should be some relay controlling the electric radiator cooling fans. Usually 2 heat sensors are on the motor, 1 for the dash gauge and the other for the fans.

You are trying to cool the transmission when the truck is in gear. When you go to Park or Neutral, the trans is freewheeling and the engine can also rev up slightly. Both of these actions will help bring down the temperature.

You need to have the electric radiator cooling fans checked. Sometimes they are built with 2 speeds and the high speed may not be switching on.

Also, some engines have a cooling fan clutch which is suppose to grip better when the engine heats up. This function can be checked with a timig light. If the clutch on and the fan clutch slips too much, it will overheat.
