How to remove alternator in a mazda tribute - 2003 Mazda Tribute

3.0L (4V) Duratec Engine
To Remove:

NOTE: This is an involved procedure. to service the generator, the right side halfshaft and intermediate axle shaft must be removed for access. Make sure of the diagnosis before performing this procedure. Obtain all replacement parts, service replacement front axle hub nut, and special tools required before beginning this procedure. More information can be found in the suspension section.

Disconnect the battery cables.

Remove the right intermediate axle shaft using the following procedure:



Raise and safely support the vehicle.

Remove the front wheels and tires.

Remove and discard the right side front axle hub nut.

Locate and remove the clip that retains the front brake line to the body bracket.

Locate and remove the pinch bolt and nut that retains the lower control arm ball joint stud to the front wheel knuckle. Separate the arm from the knuckle.

Using a hub puller, push the end of the halfshaft inwards, out of the front wheel knuckle.

A front drive halfshaft remover had a large C-shaped end fastened to a long handle. It is now used get behind the halfshaft joint and by pulling, the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip should be released from its retainer groove, and the halfshaft should come free.

Locate and remove the two inner (intermediate) halfshaft bearing retainer nuts from the bracket.

Remove the inner (intermediate) halfshaft from the vehicle.

Use care to keep all parts as clean as possible. Protect the splined ends of the shafts and expect some transmission fluid to drain from the opening in the transmission case.


With the intermediate driveshaft removed, locate and remove the right lower splash shield screws and, with a small tool, lift the pins from the retainer clips so they too can be removed.

Note that the 3.0L (4V) engine uses two belts. One is a V-ribbed serpentine accessory drive belt which drives the generator. Another V-ribbed belt is used to drive the water pump. The serpentine accessory drive belt on this engine follows a complicated path. The belt must be installed properly. Some vehicles have an underhood label showing the proper belt path. It is good practice to take the time to sketch a drawing of the belt’s path BEFORE removing it. This will save much time and effort at reassembly.

Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.

Locate and remove the nut which holds a wiring harness bracket near the generator and position aside.

Remove the upper generator mounting bolts.

Remove the lower generator mounting bolts and position the generator aside.

Locate and remove the three smaller generator mounting bracket bolts and remove the bracket.

Disconnect the electrical connectors. On most all vehicles, the B+ heavy connection wire on the back of the generator is connected directly to the positive side of the battery. This is why the battery must be disconnected before generator service. Touching this wire to a wrench or other metal surface could result in full battery voltage and amperage being passed through the connection, possibly causing burns and other damage.

Rotate the generator to gain clearance and remove through the opening in the fender well.

To Install:




Installation is basically a reversal of the removal process. Work the generator through the opening in the fender well and position so the electrical connectors can be reinstalled. Install the three mounting bracket bolts and tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

Install the lower, then the upper generator bolts. Tighten all to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

Install the accessory drive belt on the tensioner. Verify that the drive belt is properly routed before attempting to start the engine. Install the right lower splash shield.

Use care when reinstalling the halfshafts. Use the following procedure:



The splines on the ends of the shafts are sharp and can easily cut an oil seal. Tighten the two inner (intermediate) halfshaft bearing bracket retainer nuts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs).

Position the front wheel driveshaft and joint so the splines line up with the differential side gear splines. Push the front wheel driveshaft and joint into the differential side gear. Note that when seated correctly, the driveshaft bearing retainer circlip can be felt as it snaps into the differential side gear groove.

Position the halfshaft into the front wheel knuckle, using care to align the splines.

Install the lower control arm ball joint stud into the hole in the bottom of the steering knuckle. Install the ball joint pinch bolt and nut. Tighten to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs).

Slide the brake hose retainer clip back into place.

Install a new Service Replacement front axle wheel hub nut and torque to 290 Nm (214 ft. lbs). Use care not to move the vehicle off of any safety stands that are in use.

Install the front tires and wheels.

Check and refill the transaxle fluid. If equipped with an Automatic Transaxle, use MOTORCRAFT Mercon® Multi-Purpose ATF or equivalent. If equipped with a Manual Transaxle, use SAE 75W90 API GL4 gear oil.
