My battery is dead on my car, but my back lights are still on. However, they are not turned on with the switch. What is going on?

My battery on my car died tonight, but I didn't leave my lights on. I had driven in on a sunny afternoon so no need for lights. Now the back lights (not reverse lights) are on, headlights are off, switch is off, and battery is dead. Any ideas?

SOURCE: My Car Will Not turn Over

Sounds like you just need a jump. if that doesnt work and the battery is fully charged then you need to disconnect the wires from the battery and clean the cable hookups and the battery terminals. You can go to a auto parts store and get a terminal wire brush cleaner. Wire brush the terminals and the hookup till all the corrosion is off and then put some vasaline on the terminals and hookups to prevent corrosion later. Hook you battery back up and see if it will start.

SOURCE: Headlights causing battery drain while driving?

Hi:
Though your car seems fine without using the headlights, you have a charging problem, and need to get a couple things checked out. First make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. Your alternator belt should also be checked to make sure it is serviceable and properly tightened too. Your alternator should be checked under load, and lastly, your battery too. Most auto parts stores, such as auto zone, will check your parts for free,so you should only be spending money on what is broken!

without a wiring diagram, at first guess, a fuse or relay. which you can locate in the owners manual. or it could be the switch.

SOURCE: I have a 1990 Honda CRX Si. When i drive the car

Your alternator may be on it's last leg. Start the car and while the car is running, remove the negative cable from the battery. If the car dies, the alternator is no longer working. If you have a volt meter, put the meter on the battery positive and negative. You should read 13.8 - 14.2. If it doesn't show this, and reads under that, your alternator is not charging enough to keep your accessories going.

I want to know what should I do about my car being fixed and how much will it cost

Get a Chiltons/Haynes repair manual that covers your car. The trouble shooting" section should help. If your car has a factory installed or after-market anti-theft system, this may well be going haywire.

1990 buick no start turn key dash lights go out and all is dead

When you say "turn key dash lights go out and all is dead", do the lights come back on when you turn the key back to "off"?
With key off, try turning on your headlights- are they bright?
Flip to high beams-do they get brighter?
**If lights get dim while trying this, it's the battery-(dead/needs charged or replaced-which may have been caused by a bad alternator).
Leave lights on, now turn your ignition switch to "on"-do the lights get dim or go out?
Try and start the car-anything change?
If the lights were fine until you tried to start the car, more than likely your battery terminals need cleaning/tightening.
The lights should at least get dim when you try and start the car but only while the starter turns over: when the engine is running your lights (as well as all your other electrics) are powered by the alternator.
If you do all this and lights are okay all through this procedure, your problem is probably in your starter circuit. (Starter relay, ignition/key switch)

Hope this helps.

2000 Ford Explorer after turning the vehicle off sometimes the interior lights come back on and run the battery dead any suggestions?

Check the door jam switch for the light. The switch may be starting to go bad.It is probably sticking at times and keeping the light on.

When turning key all the way over it simply does nothing what could it be

Hi,
You'll likely need a new ignition switch. (The electrical side) You can confirm this by pulling the lower steering cover when issue is occurring, and using a test light on the black and yellow wire when turning key to "Start" position. If test light doesn't illuminate, replace switch. (Easy)

2002 Pontiac Grand prix wont start; unable to remove key

On many cars, if the battery is dead, it locks the key in the ignition. Put a battery charger on the car or replace the battery and give it a shot.

Good luck.
