Transmission is playing up on my 1999 VW Sharan and can't figure out how to check fluid.
You need a haynes manual.because some new cars dont have dip stick to check tranny fluid.you have to locate a check fill plug on automatic transmission differential.its located on the right side.front of drive axle.for volkswagon you got buy the tool to squirt fluid in tranny.still get a manual it will show you place to put tranny oil.
If you remove the large under tray you can easily access the gearbox filler and drain plug. The hex tool is splined and hollow in the centre but a common VW gearbox tool so £5 on ebay. Do not use after market gear oil as when this was done to my 2003 Sharan i had a strange vibration on acceleration, grating gears and notchy most times. When changing back to the original all those problems went away. If you read about the gear oil VW explain that the transverse 5 speed and 6 speed boxes take different oil due to the way the oil sways while in motion etc and the frothing can lead to premature gearbox failure. jack up the Sharan and use a spirit level to get a more or less level height. Drain the fluid and measure it in a jug and make sure you fill the same amount back in which is until it starts to run out. You need a hose from the op of the engine with a funnel going down into the gearbox. Vey easy job. Dont forget to chock your wheels and have axle stands under the chassis so you don't rely on the jacks alone.
