This system can NOT be bypassed, that dream ended in 1999. (poof gone).
the key must work or it ill NEVER stay running. (ASD relay drops and stalls it will)
if you lost both keys, (as you get with new car)
you can not make a 2nd, it takes 2 to make a 3rd, (the FSM and oper. guide covers this)
the rules are clear in the books.
    call the dealer and ask.
or call a locksmith that does new cars.
some can do this, call them first.

    does this help?
the real show stopper is the 3 key rule.
read that ...."to make a 3rd key" you.....

So that key is dead.
so you lost the 2nd key that car came with new?
that it? oops. that means you can not DIY a 2nd key.
dies parked or running?
Hacking post (sorry you will never hack this SKIM ,eva) so we go to FIX car.... now...
the cars IMMO lamp (SKIM) will glow or flash
if the IMMO kills the engine.
but you have a bad key, and all bad keys drop the ASD relay. even if driving, it can do that.

You can't fix modern cars if you dont have a scan tool. the Innova 3160 can do all jeep codes.
(zero affiliations !!!)
it does all jeep factory codes too and full streaming data.
buy ,barrow, beg, rent one, or ask a shop to..
try scanning it.
post the DTCs you get.
or it's all guess work. $$$$

my guess (wild) is the Transponder part of key is dead. on both keys? lost the 2nd key, sure..
is that it?>
skim facts?

on my dash reads a key symbol with a slash in it meaning no key. I can unhook the battery and pull the fuse out and let it set 15 min then hook it up and then press the two buttons in the jeep and turn my key on till it reads system pass self test and that works for a while but it dies in the middle of the road after a while and have to do it all again.

    great come back, !
that battery trick only hides the truth.
no need do do that. at all.
key warn, ICON. (is not fibbing!)
(means skim is not happy, there or other reasons for skim to fail, not scanning the PCM, you miss the facts.

there can be, key bad (are both?)
and PCM cant talk to the SKIM module
    or gross communication errors,

    the Pcm works like that.
the ASD relay drops for 8 reasons
1 is SKIM goes unhappy mid stride.
if that happens the PCM drops the ASD
and all spark and fuel END NOW.

    why no scan it.?
if you drive and scan at same time
it will in fact tell why the ASD relay
dropped out. 8 codes for that

you can not diagnose modern car lacking a scan too.
cant. (unless super lucky,) like a lottery win.
i uses an Innova 3160 to scan at home.

    good luck to you!

does the lamp flash or just glow before cranking????
    flash means.bad key
solid means gross system faults. scan it.

it cant be bypassed, in fact, that is the top design goal of this skim system.
if you need the full FSM page on that system, can post it,
or you can log into and read it.

scan it. the book shows them all.
P1685 , invalid key,(use the other key or get a new one at jeep, and program it.)
P1686 No SKIM BUS Messages Received
    and other PCI bus errors.
not scanning it , you must work blinds
    (impossible place to be)

ill paste the what you can do page.
from the FSM. (yes you can scan)

    (1) Turn the ignition switch to the On position
    (transmission in Park/Neutral).
    (2) Use the DRBIIIt and select THEFT ALARM,
    (4) Program the vehicle four-digit PIN into SKIM.
    (5) Select COUNTRY CODE and enter the correct
NOTE: Be sure to enter the correct country code. If
the incorrect country code is programmed into
SKIM, it cannot be changed and the SKIM must be
    (6) Select YES to update VIN (the SKIM will learn
    the VIN from the PCM).
    (7) Press ENTER to transfer the secret key (the
PCM will send the secret key to the SKIM).
    (8) Program ignition keys to the SKIM.
NOTE: If the PCM and the SKIM are replaced at the
same time, all vehicle ignition keys will need to be
replaced and programmed to the new SKIM.
    (1) Turn the ignition switch to the On position
    (transmission in Park/Neutral).
    (2) Use the DRBIIIt and select THEFT ALARM,
    (4) Enter secured access mode by entering the
    vehicle four-digit PIN.
NOTE: A maximum of eight keys can be learned to
each SKIM. Once a key is learned to a SKIM it (the
key) cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
    (5) Obtain ignition keys to be programmed from
    the customer (8 keys maximum).
    (6) Using the DRBIIIt, erase all ignition keys by
    IGN. KEYS.
    (7) Program all of the ignition keys.
If ignition key programming is unsuccessful, the
DRBIIIt will display one of the following messages:
² Programming Not Attempted - The DRBIIIt
attempts to read the programmed key status and
there are no keys programmed into SKIM memory.
² Programming Key Failed (Possible Used
Key From Wrong Vehicle) - SKIM is unable to program
an ignition key transponder due to one of the
² The ignition key transponder is faulty.
² The ignition key transponder is or has been
    already programmed to another vehicle.
² 8 Keys Already Learned, Programming Not
Done - The SKIM transponder ID memory is full.
² Learned Key In Ignition - The ID for the ignition
key transponder currently in the ignition lock
cylinder is already programmed in SKIM memory.

now you know why not having spare keys
    you will fail.
keep 3 good keys at all times or fail.(sooner or later)

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2015

    reads there is no key!
this is all we need to know.
and if both keys fail, I run 4 at all times
2 orig. 1 real spare and 1,fob-less. key.

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2015

a key costs way less than any,
$500 tow job, and $500 stealership labor...

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2015

really on modern cars that stall.
you can pay $500 for a tow or buy a scan tool for about $100.
(note earning $400+ first use, and more later)
be a Boy Scout( be prepared)
have the 2nd key at all times.
    and a scan tool .
    and WIN.

    x2 no bypass after 1998 (93 to 98 yes)
that is why I told him to scan it,
    no scans , no joy,
if intermittent , it needs to be scanned as it fails. or you miss the boat.

    the 93 bypass is here
for those landing here, googling bypass.

    answer 3,
the KEY , so you lost the spare key from day1?.opps
that is bad news, as you need 2 keys at all times ,unless $500 tows are ok, and dealer wait util monday to fix car is ok.

of the scan tool shows the key is bad, it is.
    end of road.
if you follow the rules in your missing operator guide it tells you how to DIY make a key, and you need more than 1 to do that.
on my jeep it takes 2 key to DIY the 3rd on up , max is 8 keys.

  • Anonymous Aug 07, 2015

and if the scan tools SHOW COMM errors to SKIM
    that be something else
no scan tool , no joy..

Replace a key ignition out of my 2005 chevy equinox with a 2006 saturn vue now the chevy wont start cause of the theft system. how do i reset this

The 2005 equinox is equipped with GM passlock anti theft security. By replacing the ignition you have broken the communication for this system. Your vehicle will never start again until you fix that properly. There is a way to bypass that system so it will work. I've done dozens of these bypasses and they work great. Best part is you'll never have to worry about it again. Go to this link and read up on how this system works. The bypass YOU need is under "permanent fix". Trust me, this is your best bet.

Car wont start, the security light is blinking and the car wont start

Your VATS security system is failing. Quick fix, turn key forward 2 clicks till right before it starts. Leave it for 10 minutes. (no less) turn back key and then start again. should be fine. Getting these fixed is about 800 bucks. They sell a bypass for 200 online. I did the "10 minute trick" for over a year, till finally the Computer went. I ended up doing the 200 dollar bypass. Works great, no worries.

I have a 98 jeep grand cherokee. i went to start it the other day and the alarm started goin off and it ran for a few seconds and then died. is there a way to disconnect the alarm so it will stay running...

If you use the original key to lock & unlock it from the tailgate and then try starting it, it should reset the system. Be aware that when it this begins to happen more often, it is usually an indication of the battery getting weak & losing the onboard memory for the security memory. If you are using an aftemarket key this may continue to shut down because the security system does not recognize an uncoded key.

1995 jeep gc limited runs then shuts off

The Chrysler factory VTSS vehicle theft security system will do just that. Try unlocking the vehicle with the remote or one of the three VTSS switches, both front doors or the rear hatch. Sometimes the door switches get damaged front "Slim Jimming" the lock. The rear hatch switch is usually intact. The VTSS should "Arm" after a battery disconnect or dead battery. The VTSS cannot be bypassed once it is activated. If you put a previously installed ECM that was on a vehicle with VTSS, on a vehicle without VTSS the vehicle will not run.
