The engine fires up but stops immediately. Was advised to disconnect the battery for 12 hours to reset something, I not sure what. After that the engine seemed to work as usual but after a few minutes the engine started to stutter and stoppes again. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
Could be several things. Bad coolant temp sensor could be causing engine ECU to think it is warmed up when it is not. Other sensors can be good enough to start the engine, but fail almost immediately as the begin to heat up--think coil/ignition module--crank or cam sensor.

Hello again!
I have now disassembled part of the motor of my yamaha xl 700 and noticed that one of the pistons seems to be missing a part on the top. I can see part of the piston ring from the top. Can this be the reason why the motor won't start correctly? =)
A compression test showed only 4 KG in this cylinder while the other one had 10 KG compression.
The cylinder seems ok, there are no scratches.
In your first post you did not say this is a motorcycle engine, and thus posted in the wrong place, however, the missing chunk of piston is a big deal. First, what caused it to fail, next, where did the missing piece go, and finally, what is your plan for repair? Seems to me as if it's overhaul time.
Sorry, it's a yetski engine (Yamaha xl 700 waverunner). Due to the motor getting cooled with salt water it makes the engine look realy nasty inside. =)
I'm not sure why this happened but it's probably because it's an old motor.
It's a two-stroke engine from 2002. I'm not sure where the missing piece is now. I guess it exit with the exhaust.
I will at least need to replace the pistons and gaskets. Price aprox $300 including shipping costs.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Top-End-K...
