Unbolt the hold down bolt and remove it and the flange. get the distributor plug loose and pull it up and check to see if the o`ring is in one piece. if so run some automotive silicone around the seal and add a distributor paper gasket to it and drop it back in and bolt up. other wise they want you to remove the head to pull the shaft out. there are ways to do it without going to the extreme but this is the quickest way.

We are installing a distributor on a 1987 S10 2.5 ltr 4cylender an we were not here when the old distributor was pulled

Take out the #1 spark plug and turn the engine by hand until you feel compression building when your thumb is over the spark plug hole. Now continue turning the engine slowly while watching for the timing mark on the dynamic balancer line up with the TDC mark on the timing indicator. Position the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire position on the rotor cap. When you mesh it with the cam gear, it will move past the #1 position. Take it back out and move the rotor to compensate for the distance it moves when the distributor is fully seated. Install the base clamp and bolt but don't tighten the bolt yet. Make the engine ready to run. Hook up a timing light and start the engine and set the timing by rotating the distributor until the timing marks are correct, then tighten the clamp bolt.

Oil leak on a '92 Geo Tracker. Installed an O Ring, but still leaking. Any suggestions?

O-ring where? The drain plug? Distributor shaft? Or do you mean oil seal?
Geo oil drain plug specifies a compressible copper ring washer I think? Need to clean the surfaces well, and torque to spec. My own plug's seal is not perfect, but only a drop here and there usually. Autozone or NAPA can supply you a new plug and washer if needed.

Hello i have a 1993 chevrolet silverado 1500 and i jus replaced the fuel pump and the distributor and now it wont stay running and it back fires can u tell wat might be wrong

Hello theman022002,

Your description would indicate that the timing is off. Possibly when you installed the new distributor you were off a tooth or two. Turning the distributor Will Not adjust the timing.

You will need to reinstall the distributor with every thing set to top dead center, then follow the steps below to set the proper cam retard offset.

Good Luck.

Ignition Timing: Adjustments

TEST PROCEDURE
The ignition timing cannot be adjusted. The distributor may need adjusting to prevent crossfire. To insure proper alignment of the distributor, perform the following:

1. With the ignition OFF, connect the scan tool.
2. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

IMPORTANT: Cam retard Offset reading will not be accurate below 1,000 RPM.

3. Increase engine speed to 1,000 RPM while performing the following steps.
4. Use the scan tool in order to monitor the Cam retard Offset.
5. If the Cam retard indicates a value of 0 degrees, the distributor is properly adjusted.
6. If the Cam retard does not indicate 0 degrees, the distributor must be adjusted.

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE
1. With the engine OFF, slightly loosen the distributor hold down bolt.

IMPORTANT: Cam retard Offset reading will not be accurate below 1,000 RPM.

2. Start the engine and raise the engine speed to 1,000 RPM.
3. Use the scan tool in order to monitor the Cam retard Offset.
4. Rotate the distributor as follows:
a. To compensate for a negative reading, rotate the distributor in the counterclockwise direction.
b. To compensate for a positive reading, rotate the distributor in the clockwise direction.
5. Repeat step 4 until 0 degrees is obtained.
6. Turn OFF the ignition.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 3 N.M. (25 lb ft).
8. Start the engine.
9. Raise the engine speed to 1,000 RPM and with the scan tool view the Camshaft retard Offset to verify 0 degrees has been maintained.

How do i remove the distributor to replace the little o-ring that is leaking oil?

REMOVAL.
1.First of all disconnect the battery terminals .
2.Remove the distributor cup with the coil cables on it so that it will be easy when you fixing it back and place it with care.
Note:before you remove the cup mark it side by side and that will help you know the direction of the rotor.
3.Take off the rotor on the shaft.
4.Unscrew the distributor bolt attach to the cylinder heard.put mark on the two side.because there is a gear on the distributor shaft that is driven by the cam.
the marks will allow you to fix the gear easy.

INSTALLING.
After fixing the o-ring,you will use the same procedure to fixed back and make sure you will not exchange something there.

Fixed the terminal back and start the engine.thankyou

92' grand marquis, 140,000 miles, 4.6 ltr., 2 overhd cam. smokes after idol but not when first started or after sitting for any length of time.???

piston rings are worn. do an oil change and substitute 1 qt of oil with 1 qt of lucas oil treatment. when the engine heats up the oil thins and gets past the rings and combusts along with the fuel. the fix i recommended will only reduce the sympyoms and confirm the rings are worn. you'll need a ring job to fix.
