I have a 2002 Land Rover Freelander that is stuck in Park. The stop light switch has been replaced with an autozone part, but it still does not work. The break lights are also not working.

This might help you. Otherwise, just find a mechanic you trust and have him or her check the brake light bulbs. It could also be fuse problems. Check the diagram for your lights or check your manual. http://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/5166/land-rover/freelander/freelander-transmission-problems

SOURCE: stuck in park, Land Rover Discovery

Had the same problem with my 03 Disco. Went through the usual, checking the fuses, etc. I went ahead and replaced my break light switch on the brake pedal. $15.00 fix, or I thought so; still had the problem! Took it in for repairs and found out it was fuses after all... To get the parking lock to disengage you need to pull of the housing, which is tough and then press in the locking pin at the base of the shift lever to shift out of park. you can do it with the engine running and it will drive just fine until you put it into park again. Check your brake lights if there is a problem. Could be a sign of the brake switch failure. In my case the lights were out, but a cheap trailer rental did the damage. The short in the trailer blew some fuses and it was a problem that cost me $60.00 at the repair shop....

SOURCE: 2002 Land Rover Freelander radiator and air fan not working

there is a module mounted on the fan shroud that is a common problem. but as always, check fuses, connectors and grounds!

Location of brake light switch fault on 2002 discovery freelander

The brake light switch is on top of brake pedal arm. Check your bulbs, and connections to the rear lights (unplug harnesses and clean the connectors as well as bulb(s) etc... )

Also, it (shouldn't) be the brake light switch if you can shift out of park. Good luck.

My 1997 land rover discovery is stuck in park

This can sometimes happen when the brake sensor is not being activated. If you press *really* hard on the brake, you can sometimes get it to trip, allowing you to get out of park. Generally, the sensor will have to be replaced, but I have had one car (2002 Ford Explorer) where this trick would make it work for months at a time.

Rear brake lights stopped working

brake light switch fault, above the brake pedal, may have two wires or four depending on variation of model, not expensive to replace.

Good luck Davelee
