A 4.7l trasmission is 45rf 4 speed rfe automatic 2000,202
5.2l is a 44re 4 speed torque flite automatic it probably fit there but no its not the same tram just be carefull your computer is program
NO! Check with your local dealership first! The 4.7 is a newer block and I think the other people here are getting it confused with the other sized they had. The 5.9/5.2/3.9 (not an option for 2000 model from what I gather) were based from the same block design. The 4.7 is a newer design and is different.
I don't think the bell housing and other parts are the same. Don't interchange unless you are sure and don't make the mistake I made and get the right transmission for a different vehicle thinking it would be the same (the local dealer actually told me wrong, but I didn't get a name so I got screwed) because it wasn't and I had to spend more money swapping everything over.
Exact same transmission

Many times this type of issue is caused by the motor that changes the transfer from 2 to 4 wheel drive, they get stuck, another issue is dirty fluid, have you had the transfwer case serviced?
SOURCE: i have a 2000 durango 4x4 it makes a grinding
might check the bearings to see if properly greased
SOURCE: Can I tow a 2000 Nissan Altima front wheel drive
Yes but I would use a dolly to do it. The problem is the possibility of the car dropping into gear. Also it is not recommended that you tow a Front wheel drive vehicle with the wheels on the ground. You could damage the transmission. U-Haul and a Number of other rental locations rent a Wheel hopper dolly. This puts the 2 front wheels on the dolly to be towed. It is relatively cheap and will save you damage to the vehicle.

You need to check the cv joints in the front end or the u joints in the front drive shaft. If none of the above then the problem is internal in the front diff.

check to see if you linkage coming from your selector lever to your transfer case is off. i also have a 2000 durango and the little gromlets (rubber bushings) that hold the linkage bar in place were warnout and i had to replace them. mine wouldn't go into 4 low because the gromlets were worn and alowed to much slack.
