The answer is yes and no. If you are disconnecting the battery to check the alternator, that is not a recommended practice. To check your alternator all you have to do is check the voltage at the battery terminals with the vehicle completely off. You can use a cheap multimeter set to DC and a range of 15-20 volts. Record that value and then start the vehicle and check the voltage the same way. The voltage has to be at least 1-1.5 Volts higher than when the vehicle was off. if it's less, the battery is not getting charged.
