Hi Patrick:
Let's play detective. Bear with me while I ask some questions. You just might find the answer to your problem.
- Why did you replace the starter?
- Do you know that the starter you installed is the correct one, that it works, and that it is correctly connected.
- Is the battery fully charged?
- Is the heavy cable connected from the battery to the solenoid, and from the solenoid to the starter?
- If you short across the big terminals of the solenoid, does the starter engage?
Odds are that once you've checked these you will have found the problem.
WORK SAFE! You're dealing with electrical power, and a potentially running engine. Transmission in neutral or Park. Parking brake ON.
Go slow and ponder what it is that you're going to do and what you want to happen when you do it.
Enjoy.

When i try to start it with the starter pulled out i hear the starter motor engage but when i pull the starter back in it just clicks

  • Ted Maxwell Mar 30, 2015

Hi Patrick: If you pull the starter and bench test it, and it spins over, and the bendix functions (that's the bit with the teeth on the end that sticks to the motor), odds are the starter is OK, Not a happy thought, but is it possble that the engine is seized? Can you describe exactly what happen before the problem started?...

Well it would be nice if you answered Teds questions. Why did you replace the starter. Is it possible the motor is seized. I would go back over the basics. Your batteries voltage may be fine but the cranking amps may be weak. Which explains why it turns over when pulled and clicks when installed. Have your battery tested along with the starter. Check your connections. Double check your wiring. Have another set of fresh eyes over see the work you have done, as frustration and being desperate can consume your mind.

Could be one of two things.

1. Your starter motor is no good.
2. If you turn on your lights and try to start the car and they dim to almost black, then you need to check the battery connections.

SOURCE: starter relay clicks when you turn ignition key on

I would think bad starter. Remove it and have it tested to find out. It could also be the starter solenoid gone bad.

My saturn 2002 sl wont turn over its not the battery when i turn the key it clicks all the lights work the air blows but the car wont start

The click you hear could be the starter relay.

Check the starter, cables, connections and battery by manually energising the starter solenoid. If the engine cranks the starter, etc. is ok and the fault is power isn't getting through to the solenoid from wherever it should come from.

Without any other diagnostics, My guess is the starter solenoid or the starter itself has failed. If you go the solenoid route, it is better to replace the starter as well. The solenoid is mounted to the starter, and to replace the solenoid, you have to remove the starter anyway, so just do both.

Won't crank won't start

There are two starter relays in this vehicle. One is in the fuse box, the other right on the starter. Pull the fuse box starter relay. Check for battery voltage on two of the cavities in the socket when you turn the key to the START position. If you see that, then check for ground on one of the other two cavities. If you see all those readings, try swapping the starter relay with another one of the same size and type.

Won't start

so stop guessing, buy an $10 voltmeter (walfart has one)
and do simple tests. all very easy, ask.
the first step is jumper cable starts, ! cranks/ pass/fail??????
my guess, this fails.
if my car dont jump start, (i can coast start my car)
i check battery voltgage, alhhhhhh 12.6vdc, good. 10v bad.
i then hot wire the starter solenoid.
dead, (or clicks) , starter bad, big cables to it bad,(x2) or engine seized. (or battery bad, blow 10v cranking is bad battery 99%
i hand turn engine by hand, it dont turn, it's seized.
it turns by hand; good.!
so lets say the hot wire test works (keys in pocket cranks but dont start now , because my keys are in my pockets for safety)

that means the KEY LINE Is dead (small wire to starter solenoid)
see here. works for all cars. (not hacked key lines, etc.)

2003 ford explorer wont start hear a click under the hood, i tried to jump it and it wont start. do u think it needs a starter?

Go under the car and have a helper hold the key in the start position while you probe the wire to the solenoid for 12 volts, also do a voltage test on the positive battery cable and inspect it at the battery for acid intrusion near the positive battery post clamp, if acid has gotten into the cable the outer insulation will appear swollen and the cable must be replaced, this is a common cause of no starts on Explorers.

DO you hear a clicking when you turn the key to start? Solenoid relay make a click sound when energized.
If the solenoid is not mounted on the starter motor then it will be near the battery
The key switch sends power to the solenoid. the solenid is a big remote controlled switch, and it takes power from the battery to the starter motor

I Went to start my car at the grocery store today, and when I turned the key all I get is a click from up front.

Sounds like your battery is bad, or the battery cables have built up corrosion so that you need to clean the battery posts and the inside of the cable terminals. When voltage is low, there is enough power to make the starter relay click but not enough to make the starter crank the engine. You are hearing the relay. It is located at the end of the positive cable from the battery.

Car not starting

Verify 12V at the starter (+) lead.

If there is NOT 12VDC - first check the cables - they may be frayed or damaged or improperly connected at battery or starter.

If there is 12V, and no click when trying to start - the solenoid is faulty. You can JUST replace the solenoid, but its worth your time and effort to replace the unit as a whole. (you have to remove the starter anyway).

If there is 12V, and a click when trying to start - the starter is faulty - Replace starter.

If there is 12V, and click and whine (like a motor spinning) when trying to start - starter gear has been stripped or broken off. - Replace starter.

If no 12V the starter relay is bad.

If relay is good - your problem lies in the ignition module, or key tumbler.
