Hi Stephen , do you have a check engine light lit ? Is the Temperature gauge showing that it over heating or hot ? Do you hear the cooling fans running ? They will keep running after the key is turned off if the engine is hot ! I have encountered this problem before where the ignition module was bad , but this is probably not the cause in your case ! The vehicle I found doing this only ran for 15 minutes an then died , then 10 or 15 minutes later it would start again. After the vehicle is started can you drive it without problems till you shut it off ? Can you drive it all morning or afternoon with no problems , just after you stop ?

Did you try the thermostat? Should be on top of the engine and fairly easy to replace.

Start with an error code if any read at your favorite auto parts store. How hot does it get? Possible so hot (cooling system problems) that the block sensor feeding the ECU is telling it there's a problem. A kind of safety system. Double check all cooling system components. Is the Water pump ok, or belt slipping? Battery and electrical system ok?

hey, im a usa sailor and i have also encountered this problem. how i fixed it.....,
you may be missing a little rod that attatches the handle from the cab to the crankcase. if you have that rod then see if the holes in the levers under the truck have little rubber grommets. these are what holds the rods in place.

if missing :
the rod......contact your nearest auto parts store preferably napa or autozone usually runs about thirty bucks at most

the rubber grommets.......usually any hardware store will have these for only four bucks

SOURCE: replace thermostat in 2000 durango

If you look down on the radiator, on the left side, there is a larrge hose coming out of the radiator toward the engine. Where the hose ends there is a housing with 2 bolts. The Thermostat is found under that. Remove the 2 bolts an replace the thermostat. Unles your arms are very long and thin, you will probably need to do this from under the car.
Perfect time to flush/fill all coolant. Check and replace any needed hoses/clamps.

SOURCE: loacte the fuel filter on 2000 dodge durango 4.7 liter v8

if i am not mistaken the fuel filter is built into the fuel pump. which requires you to drop the tank and replace both.

SOURCE: 2000 dodge durango driver side window problem

I have had to replace three of the four window power regulators in my 2000 Durango. They just seem to stop working within a year or two of each other.

Dodge Durango Won't Start, Turns over, NO BUS on instrument cluster

The PCM has 3 connectors plugged into it. Try wiggling each connector and listen for a clicking sound, starting with the connector furthest from the front of the Durango, and the middle connector with a white top.

If this doesn't help, replace your PCM. The PCM (power control module) can get hot, causing a short or broken circuit inside the module. Replacing the module will fix the problem. If your truck dies randomly when it's hot outside, but will start back up after it cools down, this is probably the problem.

Motor shuts down when reaching normal operation temp

Sounds like the mass air flow sensor or the air intake temperature sensor. Sometimes just wiping out the throttle body/air intake can make all the difference

two probably thing , you have a pluged radiator or the fan clush is not good, if when you are cruising it doesn' t overheating , but when you stop for 2-5 minuts it does, then is the fan clush, if when cruising it overheating then is the radiator . all this thinking that you checked the cooland level and changed the termostat with the correct oness

My 2000 dodge durango battery gage goes over to 18 and if i cut if off at this time and try to crank it back up its completely dead it won't crank for at least 30 minutes or longer after this happens

sounds link alt. starting to go bad. do you need to jump it after the battery dies, or after you wait the 30 min? or when you turn the key after the 30 min does it start right up?
if it starts right up you have to much of a drain on the battery or something you may have plugged in may be draining the battery IE phone charger, radar detector, etc.
if you need to jump it then it is probably the alt. starting to go bad.

Heater blows a little heat

you need to replace the thermostat.... quick fix for now is to put a peice of cardboard or similar in front of the radiator to stop airflow.
