Still won't shift
The word button , tips hand that it is a automatic trans,
but not which one. they had 2 that year, 42/44re and
the AW4 box, has a TCM (tranny brain.)
and all tranny brains go to limphome mode, (skipping or freezing 2nd) if inputs are WRONG.
the TCM can be scanned, to see why, skipping this step misses the boat,
I have the 1995 FSM book. chapter 21.
42 or 44RE trans? is that yours. the tag on side tells you what it is. look for the tag, and learn what car run for a drive-line.
see" trans... opt" here. ZJ

page 21-45 is diagnosis page, in the FSM book.
ON car service, and step 2 is scan it. (step one is fuses. levels)
ever consider read this book on this car and this trans?
here is the non tool way,

i use a Innova 3140 , tool that does jeep 1993-95, OBD1
i have not tried, to see if it will log a trans DTC;s
using a real scan tool , helps greatly to see all TCM codes.
most TCM can do 10 error code, all very revealing.
make sure the transmission is grounded, with a good ground strap
seen people replace trans 3 times, then do strap last. sad.
Trans issues are many
(ill skip bad trans)
a scan tool that can scan this back in 1995 was the DRB-ii
DOES THAT HELP?
SOURCE: transmission trouble
If unit has been neglected, my first thought is serves you right! Maintaining this stuff is essential.
That being said, change the fluid and filter. Use a container of Lucas transmission additive, along with the new oil. Do not expect a miracle. If it does help, change the fluid again in about two weeks. You don't have to drop pan if it has a drain plug when changing the second time. Put additive in on both changes! Likely you have a bad varnish buildup on the insides of the valve body.. you must be a really good tech to take one apart to clean it, so do not even think about it!!! Most shops do not advise changing fluid on neglected units but, if it already is malfunctioning you have everything to gain and nothing to loose at this point!
Good luck
SOURCE: shifting lever doesnt lock
Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.
SOURCE: When I start out 1st gear is fine but when it
Sounds like an internal pressure problem, check the oil condition(does it smell burnt and look dark brown ) if so get the transmission pressure checked at a garage and possible overhaul may be needed. Good luck big $ required.

Are your try cleaning the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch). Your fluid levesl are OK? Keep in mind that when the transmission overheats, the TCM shutsdown the OVERDRIVE to reduce the heat in the transmission. First thing I would do... is check the tranny fluid level. Then, maybe have the fluid and filter changed along with a flushing.
Is it never going into overdrive, or is it slipping out of overdrive? If
it never goes, then it might be as suggested above. Whereas if it slips
out of overdrive... could be another transmission solenoid (rare) or some adjust request. Sounds like the TCM or the Temperature Sensor is failed (included Thermostat).
Additionally, I quote other interesting commets:
After
trying everything I could think of, I noticed that when the automatic
locks failed to engage (at around 15mph) that's when the transmission
would not shift into OD. So, now when the locks don't lock and the
transmission doesn't shift to OD, I put the transmission in neutral and
turn off the ignition and let it coast to a slow speed (see above
caution). When I start the engine again and put the transmission back
into drive, the locks engage and so does the OD. Works for me. I'm
currently doing research on what causes the locks to engage
automatically. I'm thinking it will be a vacum or a switch.
Hope this helps. Keep us updated.
