Air Flow Control
Air flow control is accomplished in the following manner:

  • Primary control is through the function selector knob , mounted on the heater function selector switch, which is part of the heater control .
  • The function selector knob has the following positions: OFF, PANEL, PANEL/FLOOR, FLOOR, FLOOR/DEFROST and DEFROST.
  • The heater function selector switch combines a vacuum selector valve with an internal electrical switch.
  • The vacuum selector valve directs source vacuum to various vacuum control motors (18A318) . Refer to the System Airflow Schematic and Vacuum Control Charts.
  • An internal single-pole electrical switch is also controlled by the selector. The switch controls the electrical supply to the heater blower motor switch (18578) .
  • The position of the function selector knob determines the manner in which the system will operate.
  • Each position of the function selector knob is detented for positive engagement.
  • You probably have a vacuum leak , Pull heater control panel an check for vacuum . A broke vacuum hose or The vacuum selector valve is bad ! Or check for a vacuum hose in the engine compartment being off somewhere !

SOURCE: Vent control

You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.

SOURCE: why does the ac on my 2003 ford f150 blow through the defroster

Most likely it is a vacuum problem. That's what controls the air flow flaps.

SOURCE: My 2003 Ford Expedition a/c blows out the defrost

The vacuum motor is not operating right due to a loose vacuum tube, ore electrical connection or the logic is bad in the climate control electronics. The vacuum motor controls the door angle which controls whether the a/c blows out of the front vents or the defrost vents.

1996 ford windstar blowes cold air thru defrost only warm in back

For some reason this question was listed a dozen times within an hour or so.
Usually the problem is a blend door under the dash. The blend doors direct air thru the heater core and the vents.

Blows cold but only thru top dash vent

Sounds like you have a problem with your blend door in your air distribution box behind the dash. Somebody needs to get in there and figure out why it won't switch from defrost to the vents or floor setting.

My 2001 ford windstar only blows cold air through the front vents when it is on heat setting - the A/C works

My 1989 T-bird had the same problem. It turned out to be a water pump issue/radiator leak.

I have a 2001 ford windstar where the air conditioner is only blowing in the defrost mode

Either there is a loose, disconnected or leaky vacuum hose from control to module/actuator, or they may be bad also. Or the control is bad. Further testing will be needed. You can check vacuum pressure of acutator and also the control unit to see if there is pressure. The actuator controls a flap that directs the air. This flap tends to stick and the actuator can also go out. They are inside the venting behind control panel

No heat - ac stays on blowing through defrost vents

If you have the heater directed to the windshield, the AC will turn on. Move the control away from defrost.

Heat not working right

One of the vacuum controlled vents that direct the air is not working. This won't be fun to verify.
