Passlock cannot be disabled. This is your life now, you must obey the computer.

But srsly, how do you know that is the problem? Have you scanned for DTC's?

A common problem on the ION is a faulty ignition switch.

Even if the battery is low or has weak connections, there is enough power for accessories but not enough to turn the motor over. A bad solenoid will also cause this

You need to buy a new battery. My 2005 Saturn ion had the same problem. The ECU has to see a certain voltage to crank the starter over.

Check out this link. Your symptoms sound like the infamous failed antitheft system known as passlock. This system comes standard on your vehicle, and is known to fail and cause this exact problem... http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

The Saturn Ion randomly will not start. The starter will not rotate all the way, then the security light turns on. I have to weight at least 5 min then it might start just fine or start up for a second...

Something to do with the PASSLOCK system - anti-theft . Loose passlock sensor or key . Thing's do wear out after time . The passlock sensor is part of the ignition lock cylinder housing .There is also a magnet in the lock cylinder an when you turn the key the magnet rotates past the sensor causing a voltage signal that the module in charge (BCM) reads ,worn or sloppy fitting parts are probably the problem . Your vehicle is 14 years old , just think of how many times the key was stuck into the ignition switch an turned . Don't know of any by-pass fixes for this , look on line . Or you probably would have to replace the whole lock an lock cylinder .

Does anyone know a way around the cold weather not starting ION? Now that saturn is no more, GM has more than doubled the price of fixing ignition switch. i believe my estimate was ..starting around $600

Hello Tricia,

The fix is unbelievably simple and NOT the ignition switch. It is however the pass lock white wire. The wire is located in the steering column. You can find a youtube video on it. You simply remove the airbag fuse (for safety), unscrew two screws under the steering wheel, you will see many wires. Find the wire wire (a guy has a complete instructional video on youtube), crank your Ion, cut the wire while it is cranked, seal the ends and replace everything. The only draw back is the passlock dashboard light will stay on. The passlock system is basically is someone steals your car without a key, it tells the computer to stop giving it gas. I had the same problem and since I cut the white wire it has cranked EVERY time. Good Luck, it will only cost you around 5 bucks...

We have replaced the ignition switch in our 2003 saturn ion. How do we reset the passlock?

Leave the key in the on position for 10 minutes until the security light stops flashing. Turn the key off and wait 5 sec. If it starts and dies, leave the key on for 10 min. again. You might have to leave the key on 3 times. While you are doing this have a battery charger on it. If the battery goes dead. (You might have the key on for 30 min if you have to do it 3 times the battery might get low) you will have to start all over.

Anti-Theft Immobilizer on my 2003 ION

ok you need to re-learn your passlock. to do this. turn the key all the way to start and leave it on. you will then see the passlock light flashing. let it sit for 10 mins. or until the light stops flashing. then turn the key off and take it out for 30 secs. repeat this 2 more times. after the last 10 min cycle when the light stops flashing. take the key out for at least 1 min. now try to crank the vehc. that should solve your problem. have a great day!

Car wont start.

Sorry the saturn's do not have a inertia switch. But more information would help. Like does the security light activate on the dash, you may have a bad Passlock, Place the ignition key to the on possition for 10 min and then try starting it.
Good luck and let me know how things are going. There should be instructions in your manual on how to get the car started if the Passlock is giving you problem.

2003 Saturn Ion will not start. Security lock is on.

The fix for this problem is well known, so is the cause. GM needs to step up in my opinion. You can fix it yourself if you're willing
