Hi EVE , I would suggest you take it to a reputable ASE Certified repair shop ! Do you know what transmission you have there are three different ones for your vehicle along with three different engine possibility's ! It could be the switch or a solenoid in side the transmission or a wiring problem or even a control module problem !
OVERDRIVE OFF SWITCH
DESCRIPTION
The overdrive OFF (control) switch is located in the shift lever arm.
OPERATION
The switch is a momentary contact device that signals the PCM to toggle current status of the overdrive function. At key-on, overdrive operation is allowed. Pressing the switch once causes the overdrive OFF mode to be entered and the overdrive OFF switch lamp to be illuminated. Pressing the switch a second time causes normal overdrive operation to be restored and the overdrive lamp to be turned off. The overdrive OFF mode defaults to ON after the ignition switch is cycled OFF and ON. The normal position for the control switch is the ON position. The switch must be in this position to energize the solenoid and allow a 3-4 upshift. The control switch indicator light illuminates only when the overdrive switch is turned to the OFF position, or when illuminated by the transmission control module.
OVERDRIVE ELECTRICAL CONTROLS
The overdrive off switch, valve body solenoid, case connectors and related wiring can all be tested with a 12 volt test lamp or a volt/ohmmeter. Check continuity of each component when diagnosis indicates this is necessary. Refer to Group 8W, Wiring Diagrams, for component locations and circuit information.
Switch and solenoid continuity should be checked whenever the transmission fails to shift into fourth gear range.

hey, im a usa sailor and i have also encountered this problem. how i fixed it.....,
you may be missing a little rod that attatches the handle from the cab to the crankcase. if you have that rod then see if the holes in the levers under the truck have little rubber grommets. these are what holds the rods in place.
if missing :
the rod......contact your nearest auto parts store preferably napa or autozone usually runs about thirty bucks at most
the rubber grommets.......usually any hardware store will have these for only four bucks
SOURCE: replace thermostat in 2000 durango
If you look down on the radiator, on the left side, there is a larrge hose coming out of the radiator toward the engine. Where the hose ends there is a housing with 2 bolts. The Thermostat is found under that. Remove the 2 bolts an replace the thermostat. Unles your arms are very long and thin, you will probably need to do this from under the car.
Perfect time to flush/fill all coolant. Check and replace any needed hoses/clamps.

sounds like a plugged trans cooler.have it checked for proper flow should be less than 10-15psi if so it needs to be replaced. check to see if the trans cooler lines go into the radiator. if so you will either have to replace the radiator (trans cooler is part of radiator) or buy and install an aftermarket cooler

if i am not mistaken the fuel filter is built into the fuel pump. which requires you to drop the tank and replace both.

I have had to replace three of the four window power regulators in my 2000 Durango. They just seem to stop working within a year or two of each other.
