Question about 1997 Dodge Avenger
By holding the throttle to the floor - it puts the Fuel Management Computer in "Clear Flooded Engine" mode - it shuts down the fuel.
The rattle could be detonation. You really need to do some troubleshooting / Fault Codes etc. Troubleshooting may vary a little depending on which engine you have. There are several reasons that could cause the excess fuel / flooding.
