Remove the axle nut and pull the axle off of the hub. Now you should have enough room to get the ball joint out.

How do I remove the spindle axle on a 2001 dodge ram 1500 2wd? And what is the name of it exactly?

The spindle is what holds the front tires on. The axle is what holds the rear tires on. To remove the spindle, you have to remove the brake caliper first the remove the ball joint nuts. hit the spindle were the ball joints go in. The shock will release the ball joints. To remove the axles, you have to remove the differential plate, spin the differential until you see the bolt that locks the center pin in. remove both. push in the axle and remove the C clip. pull the axle out.

How do you change a front axle u-joint on a 2006 3500 dodge ram

you will have to change both sides to start with. I'm doing this on a 1996 ram 1500. first, put the truck on 2 wheel drive or neutral for traction, raise vehicle, i got a lift it's easy, remove both wheels, calipers and rotors. unlock the driveshaft nut (cotter pin) and unbolt that nut. on the inside of the hub, first mark the relation on one side between the yoke and the shaft, then, there is 3 bolts holding the hub in, remove them. next, more cotter pins, upper and lower ball joint and tie-rod end need to come out, so, unscew the tie-rod end first and seperate it with ball joint seperator. do the same for the upper and lower ball joints. seperate the spindle and the axel should come out. the rest is standard procedure to change a ball joint.
let me know if it's enough info or if you want more please.

Replace c-v joint

  • Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. Using the ½-inch air gun, remove the wheels. Use the wire cutters to remove the cotter pin in the lower ball joint.

  • Unscrew and remove the two bolts holding the caliper to the mounting bracket. The bolts run through the caliper from the engine side. Remove the caliper, but do not let it hang by its hose.

  • Use a wrench to take the nut off of the lower ball joint. Insert the ball joint removal tool in between the spindle and the lower control arm. Hit the tool with the hammer until the ball joint comes loose.

  • Use the ½-inch air gun and the proper socket to remove the large nut on the end of the CV axle. This is the one in the center of the rotor. Push the axle in toward the engine slightly, just to make sure it is loose. If it is not loose, tap it with a hammer.

  • Use the ½ inch air gun and an 18mm socket to remove the two large bolts in the base of the strut where it is attached to the spindle. Pull the spindle from the strut to separate the two.

  • Grab the rotor and lift the lower ball joint out of the spindle. Pull the CV joint out of the spindle and then place the lower ball joint on the spindle back into the lower control arm to hold it there.

  • Insert the pry bar between the inner CV joint and the transmission. Use a fast yank on the pry bar to pry the CV joint from the transmission.

  • Insert the new CV joint into the transmission as far as it will go by hand. The CV joint has a snap ring on the end that is going in the transmission. It gives a little resistance to going in. Use both hands and pull the outer end out about 1 inch and then slam it in toward the engine. This quick movement will get the CV joint to seat in the transmission. Check to make sure that the CV joint is all the way in before proceeding--look at the distance between the CV joint and the transmission.

  • Insert the outer end of the CV shaft into the spindle and rotate the rotor slightly to get the splines to line up. Push it in until the tip of the axle begins to come out the outside of the spindle enough to get the large nut on. Put the large nut on a couple of turns. Put the nut back on the lower ball joint but do not tighten it yet.

Push the spindle back into the lower mounting point on the strut and insert the two large bolts and nuts. Use the ½-inch air gun to tighten securely. Use a wrench to tighten the nut on the lower ball joint. Insert the cotter pin below the nut for safety.

Tighten down the large axle nut securely with the ½-inch air gun. Put the brake caliper back on and insert the two bolts through the caliper and tighten. Replace the wheels and the lug n

Upper and lower ball joint replacement

to remove the axles, remove brake caliper and disc, remove hub assembly, the center hub/axle nut and...(there are i think 3-4 bolts on the back side of the spindle to remove the hub), you may have to force the hub off the spindle with a hammer or air hammer... once the hub is out the axle should slide out of the front differential allowing access to the ball joint nuts for removal...

    2002 1500 4 x 4 Replacing front wheel bearing hub; can't get to the 3 bolts

to start with, that is not a u-joint cover, it is a cv joint. if this is a chevy. you will have to pull the cv shaft out of the spindel. first loosen the outter tierod nut on the spindel, do not take off completely but just so its on finger tight. get a large hammer and hit the spindel right where the tierod goes through it. a couple of good shots and it should drop out take off nut and move outter tierod aside. now you are gonna do the same thing to the lower ball joint. only when your ready to hit that part of the spindel where the ball joint goes through get a prybar under the upper controll arm and get a budy to push up on it. as long as the shock is still bolted on your in no danger. pull the spindel out towards you from the bottom and you will have enough room to pull the shaft out of spindel to get the nuts. you might have to put ball joint back in without shaft in place to hold spindel still to break those bolts loose. make sure you use new cotter pins on ball joint and tierod nuts

    2002 chevy cavalier drive axle

You may have to have half inch air impact gun to remove the spindle nut (in the center of the rotor). I'd make that the first task to undertake because your next task will be to remove lower ball joint. After you get that spindle nut loose, take a hammer, 32 oz. preferrably and whack area directly behind lower ball joint to coerce it in to loosening up. Then take a decent pry bar and lift up on the whole spindle assembly and if it don't release, go whack the front side in front of lower ball joint. After you get it to come free from lower A arm, take a pry bar and insert it in between the CV joint and transmission housing. Do not put a lot of pressure that will over stress the transmission case, just vigorously enough to get the CV joint to pop out of the circlips that holds it into transmission. Make sure when you put new one in that CV joint reseats all the way and reverse procedure is the same.
