Hi Ed , there are a lot of things on modern cars that can cause the problem you describe , from electrical to electronic modules an serial data communications . If you are not familiar with this ,I suggest you type in your search bar or google GM class two serial data transmission , or data bus . The serial data circuits are the means by which the microprocessor-controlled modules in the vehicle communicate with each other and the scan tool. There are 3 different types of protocols on this vehicle:
?€¢
The universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART)
?€¢
Keyword 2000 data line
?€¢
Keyword 82 data line
The scan tool accesses the following module data lines:
?€¢
The engine control module (ECM), Keyword 2000
?€¢
The transmission control module (TCM), Keyword 2000
?€¢
The theft deterrent control module, immobilizer, Keyword 2000
?€¢
The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), UART
?€¢
The electronic brake control module (EBCM), Keyword 82
?€¢
The remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), Keyword 82
The speed sensitive power steering (SSPS) module, Keyword 82
I have had customers bring there cars after cousin Fred told them to do this or that and they cost them self's a lot more money then if they had brought it to me in the first place ,I have been doing this for thirty years an I have been to many General Motors training classes on this stuff. These vehicles are very complex and you need highly sophisticated tools to work on them. Don't get me wrong ,sometimes it can be something simple . But if you are not a automotive Technician I wouldn't mess with it .Have seen people spend hundreds of dollars just replacing parts and still not fix the problem, then they bring it to me. You should check with the dealer, sometimes there are Technical Service Bulletins and reflash up dates for modules that fix the problem ! I am real tried of people wasting there money thinking they can save them self's a buck, an end up spending more then they needed tool listening to people who don't have a clue !!
